About the Author

Chris has studied the Great War from a very young age. His interests include the effect of the Great War on families and home. The Love and War series reflects the investment in humanity in the conflict that should have ended all war. As well as time spent studying the battles and the military developments, he has also studied the effects of the Great War on the lives of the descendents of the soldiers and civilians caught up in the conflict and innocent of the blame for its cause. Chris works in Further Education and is an active member of the Manchester 500 Advanced Motorcyclists Group, offering support as an observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists/Motorcyclists. In his spare time, he is a volunteer with the North West Blood Bikes Manchester. The charity transports blood and blood products, donated human breast milk samples and urgent controlled medications for local hospitals and hospices. The charity benefits from his writing. Chris loves nothing more than getting on his motorbike and riding off to the battlefields of Europe, seeking authenticity for his stories and adding a human interest to the calamity that was the Great War. Chris is also a member of the Royal British Legion, the Royal British Legion Rider’s Branch and The Western Front Association.

This story portrays all the horror of trench warfare in amazing detail, especially the disastrous early days of the Battle of the Somme, in amazing detail. I felt I was there living through it all with William. I have visited many of the places in northern France and around Ypres in Belgium that are mentioned in the story and this made William's experiences even more vivid for me. There was a special poignancy, too, in the contrasts between the halcyon days William had spent with Odile in the small pre-war French village, his return there at the height of all the fighting, and then his later return to the devastated village after the war. It is not an easy read, but the 1st World War cannot be sugar-coated with glib references to 'trench warfare' and 'going over the top' to attack enemy lines. Chris Cherry reminds us of the realities of this brutal war, and of the thousands of young men who were slaughtered in the most horrific bloodshed. As we approach the centenary of the outbreak of the war, I feel this story should be read by everyone - and should also be mandatory reading for everyone (high school students included) who wants to know what it was really like on the Western Front. Thank you, Chris, for a story that will forever stay in my mind.

I have just finished this wonderful book, I read many books set in ww1 and can say that this one is one of the better ones. I was gripped by it from page one. Knowing the areas covered in the book I was there with william on the main road to Albert etc. A fabulous read and will be recommending it to my readers group

This book had me gripped from start to finish. It was a journey through the horrors of war through the eyes of a brave young man whose love for a young French girl carried him through many dark days. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster as I was able to vividly imagine each chapter - this was entirely due to the skilful writing of the author who clearly has put a lot of thought, research and planning into this truly gripping read - an excellent read.

A story of travel, love, loss snd hope; The Mad Game is gripping. Historically well researched the story sets the scene of a peaceful setting with war drums in the distance.

I particularly enjoyed the pace of this story. Too many books linger on the detail or rush significant points. The Mad Game finds a happy level.

I found William's Story to be a great read with a good balance between 'story' and historical / geographic truth. Knowing many of the areas where the story takes place, the sheer scale & horror of the deaths & injuries (on both sides) can be easy to lose track of when individuals are swamped amongst the hundreds, thousands & tens of thousands. Giving well know actions a simpler personal focus was a great idea, and well executed.

can't wait for the next book

Excellent compulsive read. The descriptive made me feel part of the action. Having worked in the cemeteries the description of the area and terrain was so real it pulled you in to the story. Can't wait for Odile's story. Thoroughly recommended reading for historians and those who enjoy a good story.

A story that will stay with you,not least because of the totally shocking and moving account of life in the trenches and the horrors facing the young men,as they went"over the top" and the vast numbers of losses, but also the determination of one young man to be reunited with his love again.very poignant especially as its the centenary of ww1 .

I loved this story and just couldn't put it down until I had reached the last page. So much is known about the facts of the First World War but we are only just getting to know about the people and their emotional and physical challenges. The characters are authentic and you are carried through their experiences with an empathy that pushes you through to the end. It is clear that the author knows his stuff and the reader is left feeling as if they know a little bit more of what faced our brave soldiers during this terrible war.
