Terrific book! I hate to say, "This isn't typical chick lit" - because I like a nice fluffy book right along with the rest of you. But this book is a bit deceptive (the cover art certainly is - ugh). Sure, it's chock full of brilliant humor, tangled and intertwining relationships, crisis, great love, great loathing. All the earmarks of a chick lit book, right? No. Clementis does a fabulous job at creating a wonderful tale, that transcends any typical genre. The main story (and this sounds so simple, but it's not) is that Lorna has lived (happily) with Rob and his four daughters for 10 years. They're not married because Rob is still legally married to the woman who left him ten years ago with 4 children under 5. I'm not spoiling any plot by telling you that the wife shows up and all kind of havoc breaks out. I read this book with such an ache in my stomach - you feel Lorna's panic that she's about to lose everything that matters to her, particularly "her" girls. Because make no mistake - they are hers, much more than they are either of their biological parents. True, she's upset about the changes to her relationship with Rob, but it's mainly the relationship with the girls that she's worried about. The book also examines the nature of friendship and loyalty - and it gets ugly, let me tell you. My personal opinion was that by the end of the book, you don't think much of any of the men in this book - even Simon (the luscious younger man who comes along to really make things difficult) and especially Rob. Clementis does a great job of letting us see their humanity and vulnerability, but ultimately they seem weak and unable to "love enough". The ending is highly satisfactory and you know that Lorna will be happy, but it's very realistic. In real life, relationships aren't wrapped up in a tidy package with Mr. Right carrying the heroine off in the sunset. I was truly blown away by this book - I just didn't expect it to be so powerful. I'll be searching for Clementis' back list soon!

I read this book about 4 years ago so can't really remember the story but I recall it's one of the best and funniest book I ever read. The book's been sat on my shelf looking down lovingly at me ( cause it's too good to be given to anyone) so I decided to add a review today.

I enjoyed every page of the book.

I read the author's first book BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY and loved it. This is even better! A refreshingly real look at modern relationships it's full of witty one liners but also manages to mix serious subjects in with the humour. Francesca Clementis is fast becomming one of my favourite authors - she just gets better with each book...Can't wait for the next.
This is ideal Xmas reading. Wish I could give it more than five stars!

I bought this book by chance as I had nothing to read one day - I made a good choice! As the main character goes through the turmoil of her children being upset by the sudden return of their birth mother you really feel for her. Hurt, anger, sadness - reality! It's all there. Looked forward to reading more every night, disappointed it came to an end!

It was a really good book and very insightful. The characters all came to life and I really wanted to find out what happened to them all.
