This triple DVD pack contains all four episodes of the Macross Plus series and Macross Plus: The Movie. This is the first time all of Shoji Kawamori's masterpieces have been brought together in this exclusive package.
2040 AD Planet Eden. This Minsitry of Defense is testing and developing a transforming super-stealth aircraft: an advanced defense vessel to counter alien attacks. Isamu Dyson, the jet fighter maverick, is assigned as a test pilot competing against his old rival Guld. As a tale of technological espionage, computer generated pop stars and double-crossing unfolds, Isamu must first win the battle of the skies before tackling Gild in the battle for his childhood sweetheart Myung's affections.

The film centres around the testing and development of a new transforming space fighter(if you've seen any other macross series you will know what I'm talking about) to replace the ageing model currently in service. Maverick pilot Isamu Alva Dyson, after a number of incidents of insurbordination, is transfered to the New Edwards Test Flight Centre on his home planet of Eden. There he is assigned to pilot the YF-19, one of the two models beng tested. There he meets two figures from his past, Guld Boa Bowman, pilot of the YF-21, and Myune Fang Lone. These charachters have some history together which is slowly revealed throughout the course of the film. In this mix is also a computerised singer called Sharon Apple, who plays a huge part in the story.
The films action is extremely well done. High speed aerial dogfights are seamlessly mixed with close quarters mech combat as both pilots push their machines to the limit. The music is first rate as it was composed by Yoko Kanno argueably the best composer in anime today(her work is also found is series such as Cowboy Beepob). The 5.1 mix on the DVD is also excellent making you believe you are right in the film.
Macross Plus is ,in my opinion, the best of the Macross sequals easily outclassing Macross II. I would reccomend this film to any lovers of japanese anime as it has a healthy mix of everything, comedy, romance, action, sadness and a musical score that will leave you breathless.
The release consists of 3 DVDs: Series parts 1 & 2, series parts 3 & 4 and the movie. Like those of others all my DVDs are mislabeled (idiots!). The series DVDs are well done, if lacking in extra features. Both english and japanese are available, not available in the UK before. However, I was disappointed with the movie, only japanese language version is available, and the subtitles are printed with picture, not proper DVD subtitles. I really, really hate that. The movie is a slightly confusing re-hash of the series. The only thing to recommend it over the series is its re-vamped and extended ending.
The case says 'Ultimate DVD', I think not, but it is OK.
I also liked the photos available at the extra content. Gives a great landscape for the note!
Besides video issue, everything is perfect! If you like Macross, it's a must!!
