Machine Gun Preacher tells the inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds his unexpected calling as the savoir of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children in war-torn Sudan. Gerard Butler (300, Coriolanous) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe®-nominated director Marc Forsters (Monsters Ball, The Kite Runner) moving story of violence and redemption.
Gerard Butler has his best role to date playing real life person Sam Childers, a down and out in America who is hooked on drugs and involved in dealing them. Things come to a head when he ends up brutally stabbing a hitchhiker who tries to attack him and his friend, and dumping his body on the side of the road. He looks to his wife, a born again Christian for help and his life evolves in more ways than one....
In a very realistic portrayal of the crisis in Sudan, understandably this is a heartbreaking film especially because the barbarism still continues today, however Gerard Butler's character breaks that up with his inspirational speeches and drive. He reinforces that sense of urgency about not sitting in some board room talking, but about 'taking action'.
This is a must see movie. An unbelievable story of one person's struggle to help children in South Sudan who were being taken from their homes and brutalized, turned into (unwilling) soldiers, abused beyond our imagination. Gerard Butler is giving an outstanding performance as Sam Childers. You might also want to read the book "Sam Childers Another Man's War"
