Dr Turner presents a thorough examination and analysis of the term 'multiculturalism'. This is a term we have all heard used by the politicians, journalists and other 'experts'. However, when one reads the analysis of this term it becomes clear that the term does not hold a clear meaning (possesses low referentiality). We all ‘sort of know' what it means - but the nebulous nature of the definition is a factor that has consequences – as is the fact that this ‘fuzziness’ goes largely unnoticed.

Social and political phenomena are occurring that are unwanted by many people, and many people are being harmed. And yet most people say nothing - other than perhaps a whispered grumble in a safe and private place.

Why has 'nobody' said anything?

Are we too scared to say anything?

Why is there a feeling that something is not right?

Are we confused?

Why are these things happening?

Do you feel you can’t quite express what you think and/or feel?

Are we not free to speak out?

Is truth illegal – if so, how did this happen?

How can a ‘free society’ allow this harm and suppression to occur?

Is this 'soft totalitarianism'?

Why do the speeches by politicians and ‘experts’ not quite make proper sense?

Do we really understand what is being said?

Are people using Orwell’s 'duckspeak'?

Can censorship operate from within a person – and if so, how?

Can words be used as tools of control?

Can we even think in a free manner?

Is dissent impossible? Is it illegal?

Is telling the truth a revolutionary act?

One significant factor contributing to the inhibition of dissent is that people are controlled by certain terms.

This paper examines how certain terms can be used as tools to exert social and political control over a population. These terms facilitate such control because of the very nature of the terms. The power can act in both direct and indirect means. Although originating in the socio cultural environment, this power can operate from within a person and hence provide an almost total, and yet largely invisible, form of control. Cognition and perception are affected, and hence behaviour.

This paper aims to deconstruct these terms and hence to free people’s minds from this control and thus enable more honesty, reason and transparency. This might improve thinking, debate and perception - and hence less harm might be perpetrated.

The powerful terms of: 'multiculturalism', 'racism', and 'equality' are nebulous-power-words, as is demonstrated by Dr Turner in this paper. Because these terms are lacking high referentiality they can operate as smokescreens and mirrors - obscuring issues, confusing and manipulating people, and thus facilitating social and political control.

Although not holding high referentiality from a rational perspective, the meaning of these terms is analysed from a social representation perspective. Under this perspective the manner in which low referentiality terms can hold meaning is explained – this being a different form of meaning than that of the rational perspective.

This paper is a foundation and introduction to a longer book/paper by Dr Turner that is to be published in the future.
