After many years I decided to build an enthusiast PC for my Audio-Video-CAD-Gaming needs. I did my homework.My last PC build was based upon Intel platform.This time around, for my budget and computing requirements, I decided to give the new AMD-Ryzen platform a try. Here are my summary build:

Motherboard: MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon AM4/AMD
CPU: AMD Ryzen-7 1700 @ 3.0GHz Stock speed
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC Freezer 33 CO - Semi Passive CPU Tower Cooler with Dual Ball Bearing/Max. Cooling Capacity: 320W
RAM SET 1: Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) Vengeance LPX DDR4
RAM SET 2: G.Skill F4-3200C15D-32GTZ DDR4
SSD: Crucial MX200 250 GB SATA 2.5 inch internal
GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 Hybrid
PSU: EVGA 650W P2
Casing: Nighthawk 117
BD/DVD: Pioneer BDR-209DBK 16x SATA Internal BD/DVD/CD Burner
Monitor: BenQ-VZ2470
Setting summary: (attached snapshots)
-3.9GHz overclock @1.375 CPU Core Voltage/ Mode4 CPU load-line correction is required (Mode3 is unstable, higher not recommended)
-2933MHz DDR4 RAM @ 1.39Volts DRAM voltage (also set Ref. voltage to 0.75 for stability)
-RAM timing/Corsair: 18-20-20-20-38 (relaxed/waiting for further BIOS updates)
-BIOS version 1.4

Set-up Notes:
-16gbx2 G.Skill RAM (rated 3200MHz) does not boot above 2667MHz. I returned them after much effort.It could work at higher frequency after few more BIOS updates but I could not wait that long for this build.
-8gbx2 Corsair RAM does not post above 2933MHz, although rated to 3200MHz.I tried many combinations.BIOS updates required.
-I filled up slot-B for each RAM channel. On channel-A, they did not work for me or gave lower speed.
-The default speed for DDR4 RAM on Ryzen/MSI combination is 2133MHz both for 16gbx2 and 8gbx2 RAM kits I bought.
-The difference between CPU speed and RAM speed has to be at least 900MHz for the RAM to operate at 2933MHz. I could not boot the system at CPU speed 3000MHz and RAM speed 2933MHz.I suspect the CPU ecosystem multiplier is locked for safety.AMD/MSI may open them in future.
-Both RAM kits work at 2667MHz at 3.7/3.9GHz CPU speed.
-Once CPU is overclocked and stable, attempt RAM overclocking.Not both at the same time!
-A-XMP did not work on my set up.
-Set auto CMOS clearance 'enabled' and save the profile for each overclocking setting
-First power off mains using wall/psu button, then turn on the PC to drain out motherboard/psu capacitors chagres before an attempt to short CMOS clear jumper using a metallic screw driver.There is no switch for CMOS clearance on the mb.

Results:
Cinebench R15 score: 1790
CPUZ-Multi thread score: 4820
CPUZ-Single thread score:453
CPUZ Multi thread Ratio: 10.64

Comments:The RAM compatibility will require few more BIOS revisions. Try to use higher frequency RAM kit for future proofing. There should have been a CMOS clearance button on this motherboard!!

Conclusions: I have created a workhorse for my workloads, it is absolutely a beast!

A few design flaws but seems to be built decently.

The ram speed limits will be ironed out.
The leds on the other hand you can't see all of them if you have a big graphics card.
Not convinced the m.2_1 slot should be below the graphics card slot but wouldn't be an issue if you have a small graphics card also not sure if the m.2 shield does anything will review once I get card to find out.

One of these plus Ryzen 7 = cheap performance, I used to have a major downer on Ryzen, turns out I had a duff Ryzen 7 chip and a bunch of cowboys (CCL Computers) who just messed me about and fobbed me off. So eventually I lost patience with them and talked to AMD and they were excellent, posted my chip to Amsterdam and within a week I had a new chip in my hand that works like a champ.

So this motherboard then, oooh it's a goody, I've always liked MSI motherboards right as far back as x79, updating the bios was the easiest ever, so simple and totally guided, it saw the memory without issue, set the CPU ratios and off I went.

If you are into RGB and pretty colours then you'll love this, there are several areas you can mess with and the colours are very vibrant and infinitely controlable, the lightening effect is particularly impressive.

Overclocking? no problem, you can tweak everything in expert mode or go for general bounces in 'my first pc' mode, both work well and courtesy of a be quiet 360 AIO cooler I can hit 4.3Ghz across all 8 cores with total stability, I can go to 4.5 but that's shakier than a alcoholic with a bad hangover, 4.4 obviously is inbetween the two.

All up then it's a solid motherboard with all the tweakery you need and pretty lights, wholeheartedly recommend

laggy bios and doesn't have enough settings but looks pretty

the design looks good but the functionality is not what i expected. the bios is kinda limited in what you can do. you can only make limited amounts of changes, even in the advanced options. Also when i try to use the OC feature in the bios it is extremely laggy and somewhat unresponsive for whatever reason. I don't know if that's just my motherboard or whether it's how it was made by design.

i was expecting more for a motherboard that costs £190 (or atleast that's what they say the price is before sales price lol)

good points:
the motherboard box and manual are great, the look of the motherboard and it's led's are also great

con
functionally not many/enough settings to change and tweak.
laggy bios (probably just my motherboard if i were to guess)

Got this motherboard as it had listed high ram frequency's but highest i could hit with lpx vengeance 3200mhz was 2667mhz and even then it had stability issues under load.

Good but LEDs sometime don't turn on.
