In It For The Money is the second outing for DCI Matt Proctor, a Birmingham-based detective who witnesses the murder of Harry McGeady, in the bookmaker's own betting shop. What appears to be a mindless killing during a robbery soon unravels into a case of spot-fixing and its associated international criminal underworld.

This fast-paced novel has several twists and turns. Those who know Birmingham and its surroundings will love the novel's setting, although if you've never been to Birmingham you'll still enjoy the book.

This is the second outing for Matt Proctor, but this works well as a stand alone novel. It's not necessary to read the first (Too Smart To Die) in order to enjoy this one.

It's a good read.

Nice cliffhangers and a tight plot keep the story moving forward at a clip. The racehorse betting milieu and the seedy characters it attracts add plenty of atmosphere to this detective story, the 2nd in the series. Though the canvas painted against is ultimately broader, including corruption surrounding cricket and sports betting in general. Despite jumping in late here, having not read the prior book, I can tell you, that’s not a problem; this one functions fine as a stand-alone book. The narrator’s humorous tone has a nice hard-boiled, dry as Nevada-desert-dust edge to it. The vivid descriptions of the crimes in progress and the aftermath of the crime scenes really make them come to life.

The author, and hence his chief detective character, had a great sense of what questions to ask next, and what clues to look into, which helped drive the forward momentum of the story, all without the insights feeling contrived or forced.

The investigation soon follows a dual track in Pakistan, adding a travel lit dimension to the story and stirring in yet more exotic locales, both pluses in my books.

The book’s weaknesses were few for fans of this genre. There are some Britishisms scattered throughout, in terms of vocabulary, but the book is very accessible to Americans as the language never gets particularly thick. There are some occasional typos, but the manuscript is still edited well within the professional range.

Overall, highly recommended.

A talented Irish author whom now lives in 'Kinver' England. 'In it for the Money' is a fitting title to a gritting crime novel about sports corruption and is set in both England and Pakistan. This is the second book in a series, but even if you missed reading the first one 'Too Smart to Die', you will find that it's easy to relate to the main character 'Proctor' and is a good stand alone novel.

The main character Matt Proctor is a cop and that day was a good day for him at the races, after a string of bad luck, he had just finally won but as he goes to collect his winnings, two masked hit-men run into the betting shop and shoots the bookmaker at close range. Proctor investigates this cold blooded murder and soon finds himself up to his neck in corruption and dangerous escapades within the sports world, and that is just the beginning....

Action packed throughout that makes for a thrilling ride into the underbelly of a well thought out plot. An entertaining and thrilling read to add to your kindle library, thoroughly entertaining.

You know DCI Matt Proctor of the UK's Midlands Police service isn't a cop to mess with when he fondly reminisces youthful army reservist fire-power way beyond a Tazer. He needs all his grit, resourcefulness and prior military training when faced with international gangsters who bring death and chicanery to the gambling world starting in the UK's second city Birmingham and moving inexorably via Wolverhampton and London all the way to an explosive finale in Pakistan. The pace is fast, the tension mounts, and death when it inevitably comes is brutal. In It For The Money is not a cozy but a no holds barred suspense thriller. Full Disclosure: I received a free copy of this ebook for an honest review.

In my opinion 'In it for the money' is Tom's best novel yet. The worldly wise Matt Proctor is snatched from the familiar surroundings of Birmingham, and thrown headlong into international dealings that appear to see him seriously out of his depth. It is a well written and pacey tale that has the reader on the edge of their seat and fearing the worst for our hero. The closing sequences alone make it worthy of serious consideration for translation to the small screen.
