Read on and discover from the authors point of view the coincidence, extraordinary research and some unique assistance that made the writing of this book possible. In my opinion this made the book all the more fascinating. I look forward to more books from Fred Cooper.
The novelette is presented with anumber of excellent photographs which help to illustrate and bring to life thecharacters, the ship and the harbour life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for a couple of reasons. One - my son is training to be an officer in the merchant navy so it was interesting see what life was like back in Victorian times (1881) for seamen compared to today, and two - the book is set in the North East of England (Seaham/Sunderland to be precise) and Sunderland is my hometown. Fred has done a great job with this book, it kept my interest with action and adventure, was very informative on the ship and sailing techniques and with a fab intriguing secret service storyline thrown in too, what's not to enjoy? All the characters are excellently described and really seem to come to life out at sea. There's even photographs and illustrations to accompany the book along the way adding to the enjoyment.
I highly recommend this book to people with an interest in the sea / merchant navy / Victorian sailing ships and would happily read more by this author.
What I also liked about the book, is that it gives you a rich background and understanding of a life of a sea captain in the 19th century, which I found really interesting. Highly recommend it.
Looking forward to reading your next book.
