after some trial and error and using a colleagues reference keithley meter and expensive fluke meters we found this mastech to misreport dc voltage by -0.04volts
returned by amazon no problem and i ended up getting the fluke 101 which while it has much less features and double the price, is super accurate for dc volts readings which is all i needed.
With a Diode tester which plugs in to it supplied and an audable continuity test along with auto ranging it covers the basics and some. I was a little disapointed the diode tester is not built in but a "H" shaped dongle that plugs into the front. There is nowhere to attach it when not in use and could be easily lost if you are not careful but I can live with this minor quibble. The screen is large and bright in sunlight (which if not, could have made it difficult to read) and it comes with a inbuilt stand. This won't keep it upright on a sloapy car bonnet but works well on a flat table. The case seems suitable and should stand up to accidental knock or two. If you're going to throw a delicate piece of electronic equipment about though maybe you should stick to a lightbulb and some crocodile clips.
I'm very happy with this multimeter and even happier about the price which was the same as some other brands which had terrible reviews online.
Anyone thinking of purchasing this should obviously search out the independent reviews and You-tube Video reviews, write down what they need on their meter, what they would desire on their meter and if the quality and accuracy of the meter suits it's purpose. For me this had everything except a temperature sensor that I could possibly need and I was happy to forgo that feature (that I may never use) in return for the price point this is at.
up to show you where the test leads should be, if say, you are in voltage and you change to say current but have not changed where the test leads are, the meter will bleep to tell you you have something wrong. Measuring capacitance you have to wait a short time for the meter to stablise, not a big problem. When I was looking for a new meter I found it on a few Hong Kong and China sites, but if you buy from this seller they will save you money. Ok, only a few pounds but they arre selling this item at the best price.
It is sturdily made and has all the usual functionality plus hFE and capacitance test via a neat little plug in adaptor. The adaptor is also useful for testing continuity of components by directly plugging their legs into the adaptor rather than trying to hold the probe tips against the legs. The auto ranging is useful too.
I like the sound&light warning - it lights up the terminals that need to be used for a particular function and sounds a warning buzzer if you have the probes plugged into the wrong terminals.
It gets 5 stars from me.
Also it has auto range detection for some sections like resistance which it will detect automatically if it in ohms rane or kilo or mega ... etc.
