Product description

Product Description

Following the release of his 2012 debut album, London-based artist Jake Morley established a strong grass roots fan base and festival slots at The Isle of Wight, Latitude, Secret Garden Party, & a sell-out headliner at HMV’s Next Big Thing Festival. Enthusiastic support from key Radio 2 and 6Music shows came easily. His follow-up album was delayed by a period of intense self-reflection yet his eventual return to the studio in 2015 unveiled a new weight and depth to his music. Tackling bolder and more mature themes, his detailed new approach is expressed with clarity by award-winning producer Calum MacColl. Displaying a mixture of Gotye’s creativity and Ed Sheeran’s mass-appeal, Morley combines intelligent pop songs with darker tracks to deliver an album of complexity and beauty.

Many Fish To Fry was a great platform for Jake Morley to introduce the world to his distinctive style of playing and his way with words. The album was good from beginning to end and, having seen Jake live a few times, each and every track is one that transfers well from disc to stage. All in all, a good debut.
For me, The Manual sees Jake taking that solid foundation and growing, expanding the style of songs in his catalogue and showing a real maturity about his music. The album is thought-provoking and it feels as if you're gaining a real insight to Jake's thoughts, emotions and experiences.
Some of these songs, such as Ghostess, Falter and Allegorical House are songs that Jake has been performing live for some time now, and the final product really benefits from the familiarity this has provided Jake with the songs.
The album is produced very well; Jake's guitar playing is caught wonderfully. The album encompasses elements of the more classic singer-song writer type artist, Jake plucking at his guitar whilst using the strength and purity of his voice to convey raw emotion, whilst making the most of more contemporary elements such as the loop pedal used so effectively on Strange Loop.
I was lucky enough to see Jake perform the album in full shortly before it's release, and the tacks on this album transfer to the stage as well as, if not even better than, those of it's predecessor; no mean feat.
Jake Morley really is an artist with thoughts worth knowing and music worth hearing; an artist with, hopefully, a long and successful career ahead of him. He's certainly done himself a world of favours with this release.
