"The Magic Is You" was released in 1979 and peaked at number 40 in the charts. Recorded in the US, it features many classic Bassey performances. It had a different sound to previous releases and even today, with the excellent remastering by BGO, it still sounds fresh and new. This was the end of the disco era, and many record companies were pushing established artists into that arena. DSB was no exception, and so we have the disco version of "This Is My Life". In this 2 cd set, we have the album version, the UK 7" single release and the US 12" version, which was from a totally different (later) recording session. The rest of the album is classic Bassey, ranging from Bacharach's classic ballad "Anyone Who Had A Heart" to the plaintive "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" to Sedaka's "You Never Done It Like That.". It also features Shirley's version of "The Greatest Love of All"( recorded 5 years before Whitney!) and "How Insensitive", arguably one of her greatest recordings. "Thoughts of Love" was released in 1976 and was a Gold selling album, peaking at number 15 during the competitive Christmas market in December of that year. A compilation of love songs mainly from the early '70's, it features classics "Send In The Clowns", "What I Did For Love" and " The Way We Were" plus another nine classic love songs given the Bassey treatment. The sound on this 2CD set is amazing. On "The Magic Is You" the excellent BGO mastering reveals detail unheard on the vinyl release. The disco versions of "This Is My Life" won't be to everyone's taste, but all the other tracks on this 2CD set are Bassey at her peak!

These two albums are from 1976 and 1979..Shirley Bassey and EMI could do no wrong at that time and these albums are superb examples of Shirleys talent ..

"Thoughts of Love" is a superior compilation album taken mostly from mid 70's albums and "The Magic is you" is Shirley's last studio album for EMI ...both albums contain wonderful timeless songs ..wonderful arrangements and orchestration and wonderfully recorded by EMI...
But ofcourse I knew that beforehand...what has grabbed me about these re releases is the sound quality..it is really outstanding..I don't think I have ever heard better...the sound is so natural.....just like the original vinyl...re releaseseven when they are otherwise good sometimes tinker with the treble in order to create the illusion of more detail but these albums sound absolutely perfect ...they even sound 3 dimentional which vinyl often manages but is pretty rare for CD....they really are a joy to listen to ...well done BGO and thank you!

I'll skip the classic tracks (with excellent mastering) and and go straight to the bonuses: The European Disco Version is NOT the 12'' by Meco (which can be found on almost every disco compilation for the last few years) but the U.K. single remix that was never before released on cd! Adding to the whole, on disc2 there is the ultra-rare U.S. 12'' remix by John Luongo (also on a Dutch 12'' with no remix credits)first time on cd also. We would love the "Copacabana" versions to be included as well (disco cover of the Manilow classic - B-side to U.S. single of "This Is my Life") but this was a good effort whatsoever.

So difficult to come up with superlatives other than brilliant, tremendous, fantastic, I know every note and intonation in her voice and am pleased to have been able to have the CDs on these two which I have on vinyl stored away. Maybe I am biased as I have been a fan since 1976 when I bought Live at the Pigalle and have seen her perform 18 times.
