There's a decent amount of ports and this board supports the faster range of DDR3 which is always worth looking into, this board was about the cheapest available which would support high-speed DDR3 and had all the ports I need. The fact that it's an Asus made it even better, I've never had any issues with their Motherboards, so far so good.
My Only criticism, and it's more of an oversight on my part to be fair...It doesn't have any USB 3 headers for the USB3 ports on the front of my case to connect to, so they're running at USB2.0 speed, there are however plenty on the back, this is a minor issue since my PC sits on a shelf above my desk to avoid collecting too much dust (This really works by the way, don't put your PC on the floor if you want it to stay even remotely clean). So the USB3.0 ports on my PC are easily accessible.
It comes in its own box with a rather large instruction manual. However, unlike other manuals, this one was actually really helpful and it worth reading if you are relatively new to the whole pc building process. Installation in an elite 330 case was a doddle and seems to have excellent build quality.
Upon switching on the system it has some very helpful beeps which let you know that everything is connected or if something is not. The translation to these beeps is in the manual. This was helpful for me as I had not connected the power supply to the video card correctly and so there was no display. A quick look through the book, switch off the pc, connect the video card properly and voila no problems.
For those who are thinking of buying an fx-8350 with this motherboard, I can safely say it fits and works well. I have noticed that some people have had issues with temperature and this motherboard and I seemed to have it too. However a fairly quick bios update done through EZ update (if I remember right) and the cpu stock fan and temperature seemed to get on better together.
My prior Phenom II build was all done on an M5A97 board and was pretty awesome if I do say so, so that's what I went looking for. That board was still around and I'd heartily recommend it, but this board, the M5A97 LE R2.0, was quite a bit cheaper, so I went for it! Tie that up with the CiT Wraith case (see elsewhere) and 8GB of memory (I got the DDR3 Corsair Vengeance pack) along with a disused OCZ Agility 120GB drive I had floating around and... read the title!
This, however, is a UEFI board, so if you are considering building a system with this, make sure that the operating system you are going to use will sit on one of these without trouble. My previous build was Windows 7 Professional and this time around it was openSUSE 12.2 Linux, both of which will work here. With Linux, you need to make sure that you are using a UEFI boot system or else it will not boot after installation. With openSUSE 12.2, I needed to specify GRUB2-UEFI (this option is also on the newly released openSUSE 12.3 and on many of the other major distros including Fedora and Ubuntu in their recent releases). Windows 7 and 8 will go on OK, though I'm not sure that Vista will and XP and earlier will probably not work. As ever, the moral is to do your homework before you wade in with the credit card!
The UEFI configuration screens are a world away from the simple BIOS setups of the past, with mouse driven selections and the facility to tailor the performance of the system according to your desired use. Obviously I won't be overclocking a server like Kurumi but the facility is certainly there! I don't have the program on here but running under Windows also gives you the facility to tailor performance and monitor conditions from a utility that can be run from the system. On Linux I have just started to experiment with lm_sensors so we shall have to see how things go there.
Kurumi, at time of writing, has been happily whirring away for the last week, and Kaede, my Windows 7 box, is just waiting for her new box. Can't fault these Asus boards!
And the email support from ASUS was quite quick, unlike some other board makers I've experienced.
My only problem was with Windows 8 activation and Microsoft's appalling telephone system.
