Let start by saying the card works in SATA mode but...
The box contains two back plates (half and full height) and the card but no instructions. The card (nothing more than a PCB with a couple of passive components and 2 M.2 connectors) does NOT come with any SATA connector. As far as I can tell you're supposed to push the SATA cable connector directly onto the exposed edge connectors on the upper right hand side (not the PCIe connector). The real problem is that the PCB is so thick that it broke the SATA connector the first time I tried it; on the second attempt (and new SATA cable) I managed to get the cable on.
Once installed the computer picked up the M.2 Samsung EVO 850 without any issues.
Overall, yes it does work but I'm not going to use it. I don't like the idea of forcing a SATA cable onto an edge connector with the distinct possibility of destroying it. The only real fix would be to buy a SATA connector and solder it onto the board (as they've done in photo 2)
