M-Audio AV 40 - Monitor Speakers for Professional-Quality Media Creation

M-Audio monitor speakers are built on over a decade of industry-leading engineering expertise. The result is a sound offering remarkable definition and exceptional transparency. Whether you’re mixing, recording, or mastering, our accurate monitors let you hear exactly what is happening, and ensure that your music will sound its best on any playback system.

AV Series Media Creation Speakers feature Magnetic shielding, which allows use near video monitors, making the AV Series ideal for multi-media production, as well as in compact audio studios. Polypropylene-coated woofers provide tight, accurate bass.

The silk dome tweeters are ferrofluid cooled, delivering clear, pristine highs. Optimage III tweeter waveguides offer superior imaging and detail. In addition to the premium components, the dense wood cabinet and ported bass-reflex design provide a deep, rich sound. Convenient front panel controls include volume and an on/off switch, as well as an 1/8” aux input and 1/8” headphone output.

If you want to go beyond enjoying music and videos to creating your own, you need a serious speaker system with accurate sound. M-Audio studio speakers are music industry bestsellers*—and now AV 40s bring this professional legacy to your home. Unlike plastic multimedia speakers, AV 40s use technology that’s trusted by top musicians, engineers, and composers: premium woofer and tweeter components for rich lows and crystal highs; wave guides for clarity and detail; and wooden cabinets for tight, punchy sound. They’re perfect for creating all kinds of media—and also let you get the most out of your CDs, MP3s, DVDs, and games.

Professional Components for Superior Results

Built with the same quality materials and precision electronics as our acclaimed M-Audio professional studio speakers. The audiophile-grade Class A/B amplifier architecture, ferrofluid-cooled silk cone tweeters, polypropylene-coated woofers, and dense wooden enclosures add up to big, defined sound that defies the speakers' small size.

Clear, Cohesive Sound

The AV 40 speakers use proprietary OptImage wave guide technology—originally developed for the professional M-Audio speaker line—to deliver superior clarity and detail. Each speaker also features a precision-engineered crossover, which ensures that the sound emanating from the low-frequency driver will blend seamlessly with the sound from the high-frequency driver—so those deep lows transition smoothly into crystal-clear highs.

Extended Low End

If you crave bass, the AV 40s have you covered. With wooden cabinets and bass reflex design, the AV 40s kick out serious low frequencies—perfect for producing hip-hop and electronic music, or enjoying your favorite CDs, MP3s, DVDs, and games.

Magnetically shielded for desktop use

Most speakers emit stray magnetic flux that can wreak havoc with your computer's video monitor or a nearby TV. The AV 40s are magnetically shielded, so they can coexist with other equipment without interference.

These were a replacement for previous speakers that had served me well, with good sound, Creative T20's, but I was let down on one channel after some time.

They are quite heavy for PC speakers, and a bit larger than I thought, but that does not compromise the quality of these in any way whatsoever.

I consider myself an audiophile, I love great sound, and I wanted the best possible for my spend, and I had ÂŁ30 in vouchers as a gift from work, so that added to the value which was half price anyway.

I looked extensively at speakers available, had the ultimate choice and these seemed very competitive. I paid a lot of attention to the reviews, which drew me towards these. I don't know of any product that does not come without a negative review or more, so I had to look at the positive ones.

Anyone reading this review will have to consider me as highly positive on these speakers. They do sound absolutely wonderful, and I am not easy to impress.
I love a very wide spectrum of music, and the quality of sound is a very important factor with that. I played some well known opera music via Spotify, and it was so enjoyable. The bass was beautifully in its place as it should be without unnatural rumble, and the mid and high tones very nicely rendered indeed.

The bottom line for me here is that these are brilliant speakers for the price, which deliver superior sound to the good quality of the speakers they replace. I am pleased that I followed the overwhelming positive reviews for these, and I hope my review contributes to others satisfaction, should you choose to buy these too, and thank you to those authors of positive reviews that directed me to these.

Update, no bass?

I've just bought these a couple of weeks ago. These are the Mark 2 Versions of the AV4O monitors. The first difference I noticed about this version of the product is the lack of a bass boost switch. Remember these are Studio Monitors not PC speakers, so you don't need a bass boost because it colours the sound, and if you are using them for the intended reason (recording/producing/mixing music) then a coloured sound will give you a bad end result. Just thought I'd mention that as I did read one or two negative reviews relating to this on another website. I have also noticed that the overheating and buzzing problems seem to have been fixed (a problem people were experiencing with the mark 1s). I must mention though, that in terms of bass, these small(ish) monitors do give a good bass boost anyway, and depending on your positioning and/or work space may be better. I am a composer, and the kind of music I write and record is mainly Neo-Classical, IDM and Ambient, so the frequencies these monitors provide are perfect for my genre. However, if the music you wish to record is something such as Dub Step or other bass heavy genres, the next models up (M-Audio BXSa +) may be better. Saying that, the AV40s will probably be fine if you are working in a small bedroom for example.

I have used these speakers for genral music listening a couple of times and the sound fills the room perfectly with a nice clear low end frequency. On that note they are very good for house parties (something else I used them for)!

Overall I would say these are a good purchase, and a better option than the Mark 1s from what I have experienced so far. Keep in mind the good price, the space you have to work with and of course the music you wish to produce. I will be using these monitors frequently until I move my studio to a bigger room.

I've had a pair of M-Audio Studiophile AV40 speakers for almost a year now and not once have I regretted the purchase.

I bought these to replace a pair of Creative Gigaworks T20 speakers as I couldn't live with the poor accuracy, lack of clarity and tonal colouring. Plenty of people praise the T20s sound, but trust me they are not good!

The AV40s are heads above all of the multi-media speaker companies, but that doesn't surprise me as these are essentially entry level active studio monitors, not just speakers! As such they are far more detailed and accurate in their sound, in fact listening to tracks I've edited on the creative T20s is just plain embarrassing as faults I could not hear before are readily apparent.

As for volume, there's plenty, in fact perhaps too much if you are using them in the same location as you would multi-media speakers (my AV40s have never used more than 1/3 of what they can deal up). So if you are planning to use them in this way then the AV40s little brothers, the AV20s are probably better fit.

As for criticisms, the isolation from the desk could be better, but that easy enough to solve with 4 squash balls cut in half. Other than that certain harmonic piano frequencies can cause the grill to buzz, but that's the only real sonic fault to mention at this price point.

In looking for great sounding at a decent price, these were (after fairly extensive research) a sure thing.

I had read about the left speaker breaking for most people, but i figured if it would last me for a year, then it'd be fine. I've had them for 6 months now,and only noticed that, alas, the left speaker is losing volume. Having read other peoples responses from M-Audio,I won't be surprised if I don't get a replacement.

Overall, if you can't afford higher end monitors and could use these as an intermediary until you can, then these are a good choice, albeit the random life length that left speaker offers.
