This tale focuses on 51yo hunky ex Secret Service agent and now piano bar-owner and art enthusiast, Randy (who was a fairly prominent secondary character in Every Breath You Take), and enigmatic Englishman, Jack, an Asst. curator/art historian. I do love an age-gap romance and it’s always refreshing to read about slightly older guys instead of hairless YA’s and twenty-somethings, lol.
There’s also a whiff of the enemies-to-lovers about this one - which is another trope I love. Between Jack constantly sniffing around Randy in the hope of procuring a potentially priceless painting that he purchased in London some years earlier, and his all-round haughty and condescending demeanour and lack of appreciation for the older man’s art collection, Randy understandably takes an immediate dislike toward Jack, ensuring these two get off to a dismal start. But, beneath Jack’s too-polished veneer and their early miscommunication, there’s a genuine and almost immediate connection..and attraction. The Dom in Randy can sense the sub in Jack instantly. But with Randy understandably mistrustful due to an ex who duped him in the past and Jack’s own complicated private life, the two are reluctant to admit the depth of their feelings initially. Cue a little bit of a will-they-won’t-they romance which eventually culminates in some sexy times between the guys. And if you’re not a fan of BDSM, I wouldn’t let that deter you from enjoying this one. As a couple of very mild scenes involving a little bondage and Randy’s leather obsession(?), is about as kinky as this gets really.
And once again (as in EBYT) Randy (more than once) demonstrates his background in law enforcement and all-round good-guy qualities, when he heroically and completely unmindful of his own safety, jumps in and saves homeless, troubled teenager Danny from a gang of thugs, showcasing what a thoroughly decent and naturally protective soul the big guy is, and how much he’s deserving of the love and happiness he finds with Jack. His selfless heroics also lead to, after much mayhem, a rather sweet friendship and almost father/son bond between he and Danny, that shows yet another dimension to Randy’s multifaceted personality.
Overall, there’s a terrific mix of fast-paced thrills and some very clever plot twists here that seamlessly entwine around the leads’ slow burn romance. I also have to say how much I love the warmth and familiarity between the interconnecting group of friends in this series, which continues to expand and flourish with each book. Recommended.

The mystery was outstanding, keeping me utterly puzzled right until the reveal. Then, added leather kink and mild BDSM and the story was like catnip for me! Only a couple of sex scenes but holy shnikes, they were hot af. Some bondage was the most extreme act, if anyone's concerned. The smooth pacing and polished writing, made it easy to get carried along in the action. This is an easy recommendation, even more so if you're a romantic mystery maven.
I will read more of this author's books, especially when I'm in the mood for a thrilling mystery.
I definitely will read more by this author!
