A brilliant detective tormented by the darker side of humanity, Luther shines a light where others fear to tread, into the hearts and minds of psychopaths and killers, and the shadowy spaces of his own soul…
For Luther (Idris Elba), his profession is a vocation rather than a job. He serves his own idea of amoral order as much as the rules and codes of criminal law.
A philosophical cop possessed by the insoluble problem of evil and justice in a Godless world, John Luther is a deeply troubled man confronting depravity in its many terrible forms, over a succession of psychological duels between hunter and hunted, perpetrator and prey.
The intensity of Luther’s convictions combine with the violence of his passions to provoke the question of whether he is a force for good or a man hell bent on self-destruction?
Contains the complete Series 1 and 2 plus exclusive DVD Extra--Luther the World of a True Maverick.
Idris Elba is the magnetic star of the thrilling BBC police series Luther, a gritty, captivating drama that will impress fans of police procedurals and knotty character studies. Elba (The Wire, The Big C, The Office, 28 Days Later) is a nuanced, tortured presence as DCI John Luther, a detective focused on understanding the most horrifying criminal mind. Luther also has sacrificed a normal personal life for his work, and Luther focuses on his back-story as much as on the plot at hand. The supporting cast is as brilliant as Elba, especially Indira Varma as his estranged wife, Zoe, and Ruth Wilson as the fragile-seeming but only marginally sane Alice, with whom Luther has been having a secret affair. The episodes are fairly straightforward police procedurals, including serial killers and other creepy bad guys. But what keeps Luther extra engaging is the superior writing, direction, and production design--making watching Luther an immersive experience for the viewer. And it's not always a comfortable one--this is not the cleaned-up New York of Law & Order, where most bad things happen off screen. Luther's bad guys (and gals) commit their evil deeds on camera and sometimes in slow motion--which only heightens the suspense and deep feeling of immersion. Luther and its focus on its leading character's personal life owes a lot to Helen Mirren's Prime Suspect, but Elba and the supporting cast of Luther do even more to make the viewer feel a part of the imperfect British law-enforcement system. The boxed set includes an excellent documentary with interviews with series creator Neil Cross and the directors and cast members discussing how they deliberately designed the series to be more "impressionistic" than "realistic" in terms of plot. (The interviews would have more impact if they weren't streamed onto a computer screen, but that's a small quibble.) Catch Luther while he tries to catch the bad blokes, and enjoy every twisted step of the journey. --A.T. Hurley. Amazon.com--This review is for Luther - Series 1

The series follows him as an exceptionally talented yet troubled detective faced with various serial killings which D.C.I Luther deals with using unusual but brilliant police tactics (much to the concern of his superiors in the force). In addition to fighting crime, he also struggles to deal with a separation from his wife (first series) and helping a troubled young girl (second series). The acting by the supporting actors is also flawless and their characters are great, notably the enigmatic Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) who proves to be a problem for Luther from Episode 1 and D.S Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) who is a very worthy character and develops wonderfully. Obviously you'll see these all for yourself.
Basically, it's an extremely well written crime drama/police thriller series with impeccably written screenplay that will keep you gripped from the first episode. The ending to the first series is awesome but seriously, the second series finale will completely blow your mind, I'd say it's worth watching just for this.
Every episode has a twist in its tail and this makes for excellent viewing. I am a crime drama geek and this comes very close to my favourite. If you didn't catch it on TV, buy it now!
Idris Elba delivers a phenomenal performance as the dark but moral D.C.I Luther. Put simply, the character is fascinating. He delivers justice, but resorts to dark means to get it when necessary. Most TV detectives are portrayed as perceptive geniuses who can do no wrong, but whilst Luther is certainly perceptive, every episode goes further to demonstrate how flawed and complex he really is. Watching Luther provokes interesting questions about our own attitudes to justice- we gasp when he goes to the lengths he does, but don't we inwardly cheer for him, too, even though he is breaking the law in order to defend it? Add into the mix his failed marriage with wife Zoe, who is desperately trying to move on despite Luther's pleas to the contrary, and you will notice a stark difference between Luther's excellent detective work and his messy personal life. It seems his perceptiveness doesn't apply to people that he loves!
Undoubtedly the most fascinating element of Luther is his relationship with serial killer Alice, who is brilliantly portrayed by Ruth Wilson. Luther is equally fascinated and disgusted by her, and their interactions are some of the best TV I've seen in the last few years. The way they bounce off one another is just... I can't describe it. It gives me chills.
Some episodes are better than others, but I haven't yet seen one that didn't satisfy. I cannot wait for series 3!
Idris Elba would be the next JAMES BOND if the casting was left to me.
More of the same please BBC.
The best drama for sure.
Please dont compare this to first class crimedrama like Prime suspect,The fall or the brilliant french series-Spiral-
This is totally overrated,so what on earth IS the fuzz about
