Thoroughly enjoyable book. Characters brought to life. You feel as if you are transported to the period. You can smell the fear in the slave market. My only complaint is that I read it too quickly and reached the end all too soon.

This book had a great erotic stoyline throughout, and the eastern flavour added to the spice. I enjoyed the excitement of the sexual adventures combined with the frustration of following the demises of the women.

3.0 out of 5 stars so, so novel 19 Jan. 2013

supposedly a "classic" victorian soft sex novel. Heard of it from an article on Victorian sexual beliefs in a British history magazine. If this is the guide as to how they felt, its no wonder the empire fell. Story tells of two young maidens captured by the Turks and enslaved. They meet several other slave girls who relate their stories as well. Basically the same tale told several times. Young maiden is either captured or sold into bondage, meets the glorious Turk, and becomes gloriously happy in her slavery.

I wound up reading the first part and then skimming the rest.
3.0 out of 5 stars The inspiration of many a romance novel but more or less repeated deflowering 18 July 2016

A very famous book what was very "shocking" when it was written 2 centuries ago. But it feels like opening a romance novel you can buy still in the dozens nowadays. Woman is enslaved by pirates and given as a present by the ruler of Tunis to the ruler of Algiers who deflowers her forcefully but then has her falling for him. Ok so far. In those days also a real big problem with the Barbary pirates.

And then more or less the story stops to continue with the narratives of other rapes and deflowerings. How many bleeding maidenheads can one stand to read about? Probably for the readers public then quite ok as it might have been a Playboy anno 1800 but for us as a reader of a novel it starts to bore by repeating itself and you do not feel any connection with the persons. And as a woman in the 21st century I cringe to read continuously about women so in pain they cannot even stand up from the bed but still fall for "nature". Yes still some women have that when they have sex for the first time but others hardly experience any discomfort although having a slaveowner thrusting himself into you against your will will not help with that. But I got very much fed up with it.

The writing-style however is quite modern and the letter-concept is a nice idea.
5.0 out of 5 stars Classic porn, almost soft core by today's standards. 22 Nov. 2015

There are a couple of movies based on this book which I have not seen to date. I intend to watch both of them.
