The power of light
Brazil provides extra-bright levels of light from three special bulbs. It can be used to treat SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and sleep disorders, or to give anyone a mood, energy and concentration boost. Brazil is Lumie’s most powerful lightbox, perfect for treating SAD at home. It comes with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.
Not many people realise how important bright light is. As the nights close in towards winter and the days become gloomy, many of us begin to feel more downbeat. For some it’s something we just accept: that we are more sluggish in the darker months, more tired at work, less happy overall. For others (estimated 1 in 4 in the UK) it is more serious – winter blues or more severe SAD syndrome can be crippling, making sufferers depressed, lethargic and unproductive.
Luckily it doesn’t have to be like this. Light therapy is a readily available, scientific treatment that’s proven to help treat sufferers of SAD and the winter blues in a natural and healthy way.
The science behind light therapy
Numerous published studies have linked the lower levels of light in the autumn and winter to tiredness, overeating, low moods and social withdrawal. And they have found that in the darker days exposure to bright light – much brighter than normal home or office lighting – can make people feel alert, upbeat and energised.
Light therapy works by resetting your internal body clock. Your body clock, which tells you when to sleep and when to be awake, is controlled by a small group of cells at the back of the brain. These cells release hormones and other chemical messages to prepare the body for sleep or activity, based on how much strong, regular light is reaching the eye. This light is affected by irregular sleep routines, poorly-lit environments and low levels of light over the winter, meaning that we can feel sluggish even when we are supposed to be awake. Exposing ourselves to very bright light sends stronger signals to the brain that it is daytime. This makes us feel more awake during the day and more ready for sleep at night.
Low serotonin levels (a feature of depression) improve significantly with light therapy and the production of cortisol (which helps us to get up and go) increases. Bright light suppresses the production of the hormone melatonin, which tells the brain it is dark and therefore time to sleep. In the darker winter months, or inside dimly lit rooms, low light levels may not provide a sufficient signal to stop melatonin being produced. A lightbox can change this.
Who is Brazil for?
Brazil is a top-of-the-range, medically certified lightbox designed for fast treatment at home. The high dose of light provided by Brazil is perfect for those who miss the light of summer and suffer from the winter blues or the more serious SAD. Many SAD sufferers have found that bright lights make a big difference to their lives.
Look out for lux levels
Light from Brazil has a brightness level of 10,000 lux at 35cm. Lux is a measurement of brightness as the light reaches your eye. Genuine SAD lightboxes should tell you their lux level and the distance at which it is achieved (and this distance should be a natural one for sitting next to the lightbox – 5cm would be impractical). Brazil’s lux level has been independently tested and verified. Even the brightest office offers about 500 lux whereas Brazil provides 10,000 lux.
Brazil is a certified medical device
Brazil is certified to the Medical Devices Directive EC93/42. As a medical device, it conforms to European manufacturing standards and carries the correct CE mark. All Lumie lightboxes and SAD lights have been designed according to the results of relevant clinical trials and come with clear guidelines for correct medical usage. Our lamps are independently tested to confirm that they emit an only negligible amount of UV light – much less than normal daylight, which means that they are completely safe.
Lumie, the light therapy specialist
When you invest in a lightbox make sure it comes from a specialist, experienced company. Arabica is made by Lumie, the Cambridge-based company who specialise in light therapy products – and nothing else. Lumie invented the integrated dawn simulator (sunrise alarm) back in 1993. Working with the scientific community and gaining vital customer feedback over the years, they have developed the concepts into the best-selling Bodyclock range, as well as applying their specialist knowledge to create other devices for health issues such as SAD, jet lag and acne. They now sell a full range of SAD light boxes, SAD lamps, light alarm clocks and acne lamps.

After a few days I could definitely see a difference, I felt more alert and lively.
Other benefits have been an increased attention span, generally better sleep, less anxiety and a more content general mood.
The only downside was, initially, I felt a little nauseous for an hour or so after using the lamp, but this dissipated after a couple of weeks.
If, like me you suffer during the autumn/winter months will a general lack of energy/alertness due to lack of day light I would definitely recommend buying the Lumie Brazil 10,000 Lux SAD Light - Its has really changed my energy levels and given me a much more positive outlook in general.
In my experience, usability is the number one factor in choosing a SAD light. If it's inconvenient or restrictive you'll skip sessions. Can you eat breakfast, take a phone call or read a book, in comfort, and still get a good dose? Some of the smaller ones are not really up to the job unless you sit really close and give them your undivided attention (I confirmed this with a lux meter). By contrast, the Brazil is like sitting next to a sunny window. It really does chuck out an enormous amount of light over a wide useable area. Lovely.
Mine (purchased direct from Lumie) did have a few minor niggles. The switch is so stiff, I have to use my other hand to stop the lamp siding across the desk. The cord was a bit mean at just over 1.5m. I had to buy an extension to give me more freedom with positioning. The diffuser was a bit scuffed in places and awkward to put back in (you have to pop it out to remove shipping padding). Small points, but for the price I expected more attention to detail. On the plus side, it's nice and simple. There's no battery to charge, no clock / timer / standby mode or any such digital gubbins to worry about. You could use it with an external time switch.
Although this is one of the biggest and brightest available, I would still recommend getting a lux meter (1) to make sure your set-up is correct and (2) so you know when the tubes need replaced. Incidentally, the fluorescent tubes are not very expensive, and they're still far ahead of LED bulbs in cost/performance terms, although I have no doubt LEDs will catch up in a few years.Read more ›
It came well protected for transport, so all in all everything is well thought out, with this product.
Same color temperature as my Innosol Mesa Mega Bright, so I use them both, for my morning light bath.
I could do with just one, if my tables permitted it, but I like the freedom of having more powerful light from further away, and different angles.
Morning coffee just taste so much better in 'sunlight'!
Really bright, different to the blue wavelength lights that require similar or shorter time each day. I prefer this as it illuminates my room and i use it as a general light too.
Sit 35 cms away, may vary but curvature helps and too be honest, whilst it is bright, the receptors that reset the body clock, are found in the peripheral retina. Ie... Light entering from the side without looking directly does the job.
Takes a few days to really differentiate from placebo but for me its obvious immediately as i am very sensitive to the change in seasons and feel mood changes in the autumn and even on dark summer days.
Give it a try, its useful for anyone, not just those who suffer greatly. I believe anybody can benefit from increased energy and better sleep and mood. We are creatures after all, and most creatures change their behaviour in the darker months, either by bailing to the where the sunshine is, or sleeping.
All the besy.
