Why are Bodyclock wake-up lights so effective?
Bodyclock Starter 30 is a medical device that wakes you up gradually with a simulated sunrise. The brightening light brings you more gently out of sleep, prompting your body to reduce the production of sleep hormones such as melatonin, while increasing the levels of hormones like cortisol that help you get up and go. This provides a fantastic start to the day for sufferers of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and the winter blues, and helps anyone who is not naturally a morning person to feel brighter and more energetic first thing.
It’s not just a nicer way to wake up. Waking to natural light every day resets your sleep/wake cycle and has been shown to boost your mood, productivity and energy levels throughout the day. Our physiological body clocks are aligned by sunrise and sunset. As most of us experience a mix of early starts, late nights, weekend lie-ins and sometimes travel disruption, our internal sleep rhythms are thrown into disarray. We feel tired and stressed trying to wake up for work, school or sports training. A dawn simulator device re-sets your body clock to run in time with your day, helping you feel more awake during the day and more ready for sleep at night.
A perfect introduction to waking with light
As well as the 30-minute morning sunrise from the halogen bulb, the attractively-shaped Bodyclock Starter 30 comes with a sunset feature that helps you to unwind at night. The wake-up sunrise includes a snooze function and a back-up alarm beep for added reassurance. The bright light is dimmable so it can also be used like a normal bedside light, and the digital display dims to a low level, or completely off if you prefer, for sleeping. There is no need to worry about waking should the power go off--the device comes with power failure back-up. Bodyclock Starter 30 comes with a 2-year warranty.
Bodyclock Starter 30 is a certified medical device
Bodyclock Starter 30 is certified to the Medical Devices Directive EC93/42. It has been designed for a medical purpose, to help with SAD syndrome (Seasonal Affective Disorder), winter blues and other physical difficulties with waking and sleeping. As a medical device, it conforms to European manufacturing standards and carries the correct CE mark. Lumie Bodyclock has been tested and proven effective through clinical trials.
Lumie, the light therapy specialists
When you purchase a dawn simulator (light alarm clock), make sure it comes from a specialist, experienced company. A real dawn simulator can cost a lot of money and you want to ensure that it actually works for you. Bodyclock Starter 30 is made by Lumie, the Cambridge-based company who specialise in light therapy products – and nothing else. Lumie invented the integrated dawn simulator back in 1993. Working with the scientific community and gaining vital customer feedback over the years, they have developed the concepts into the best-selling Bodyclock range, as well as applying their specialist knowledge to create other devices for health issues such as SAD, jet lag and acne. They now sell a full range of SAD light boxes, SAD lamps, light alarm clocks and acne lamps.

Although Lumie fail to advertise it well, the product in question can behave as both an 'alarm clock' (with sunrise & sunset lighting options, as well as an audible alarm for back-up) and an ambient light, meaning that if you once had a bedside lamp, you could simply ditch it and use the space for this product. This in itself is a wonderful concept since I previously had a habit of waking up to an alarm and feeling around for the right device to bash. Using the product as an ambient light is not a bad idea either, and I have to give kudos to Lumie for making it such a subtle but simple feature.
I'll get straight to the point; Just how good is it to wake up to a simulated 'sunrise'? Really, really good... For myself, it is the equivalent of someone slowly opening the blinds in my bedroom and letting a warm sheen of light enter, which slowly makes me more and more alert to the point that when I do open my eyes, I think to myself "Yikes, did I leave the light on?". The difference I've felt compared to the more startling "BEEP-BEEP... BEEP-BEEP' almost giving me a heart-attack is ridiculously positive. Its incredible to think that a simple light has stopped me from waking up with persistent yawns and a heavy head.
Operating Instructions are included in a very simple and easy to read manual that, unusually for English labour, appears more akin to an Apple product. A 42 watt bulb is obviously included (with a 2000 our lifetime!) and which you are required to easily screw in, as well as a Support Line card (in case you have any unforeseen problems) and the U.K power cable, which is attached to the device and not un-pluggable.Read more ›
I find that I wake up around 20 minutes into the 30-minute long cycle (the light takes 30 minutes to adjust from completely off to completely on). So I have set the "alarm" time for the light at 6:10am (meaning that the light will begin illuminating at 5:40am and will be at full brightness at 6:10am) and have set my phone alarm for 6:00am. This seems to work well for me as the light wakes me up shortly before the alarm sounds. On full brightness, this light easily matches the brightness of the 11W LED (60W equivalent) ceiling light in the bedroom.
I only have 2 gripes with this product. The first is that the buttons are a bit "clicky". The second is that in order to turn the display off you must hold the "-" and "+" buttons until the clock emits a loud beep! Not good when your partner's already asleep and you forgot to turn off the display! This is the main reason for not marking the product as 5-star.
The positive aspect of this light, which far outweighs any negatives, is that I wake up far more naturally with this light and don't suffer with the groggy feeling that used to accompany waking up to an alarm in the pitch black.
Imagine this... you are in a deep slumber, your bed is warm, the room is dark, you gently stir as a majestic delicate light hits your crusty eyelids, "Oh, how wonderful...", you start to feel like Aurora, finally awoken from her slumber, then suddenly a piercing noise batters your eardrum as you fumble about in your bed, frantically pressing the buttons on the small clock interface trying to stop the incessant noise. Then you're awake.
This is the only way I can describe this alarm clock, the light feature = amazing/10. The alarm noise? Room for improvement! Luckily you can turn off the noise and just have the light feature!
