Build quality is always a concern with these brand less products and whilst I've only had it for about a month the body of this lamp seems reassuringly well made. The straps were significantly less well made, rather small & the stitching on two of the loops was coming undone, however this was easily fixed with a needle and thread.
Generally well made as it seems to be there are some issues with the design. With the fairly bulky body and adjustable focus it is very long for a head torch, which means it tends to catch on things. You can also see the end of the torch at the top of your peripheral vision. With such a long (but useful) adjustable lens design a battery pack on the rear of the head would seem a better design.
It's quite heavy for a head torch (at least half as much again as my old petzl) and you can feel that weight, perhaps because of the way much of this weight is quite a long way out from your head. Unlike with other headlamps I've used you don't forget you're wearing it when it's not turned on.
Despite the decent build quality the design for attaching the main body of torch to the hinged bit seems rather under built with simply to sprung plastic tabs holding the whole thing together. I'd much prefer the more traditional hinge and screw design, it remains to be seen how well this holds up with prolonged use.
Overall a questionably designed but generally well made, very bright and cheap head torch.
edit. 6 months of regular use on the torch is holding up well.
Lets start with a bit of background for context and a couple of my daily torches: headtorch Petzl Myo XP (4 years) and a handtorch LedLenser T7 (3 years). Both give superb lighting and are pretty well built, especially the LedLenser which is near bomb proof. Thats why I bought them. They will give days of light with constant use on the same batteries. I use the Petzl 15 minutes every night and it will be months since the last time I put some batteries in the thing! Both cost me well in excess of £100. Ok, so thats a bit of my background done.
On the product I bought, the Cree its good value for sure.
. Excellent lighting,
. One hand focus adjustment and can be done with gloves
. Quality has issues
. the elastic has little stretch (might add bunjee cord)
. the lamp itself detaches totally to change batteries, so there's a risk of falling
. the swivel mechanism is plastic, and dubious if it will last.
Battery life is to be seen, but if I get 3 hours out of the 3AAAs with full brightness, I'll be happy enough.
I wouldn't have bought it as my main light as it will eat batteries on constant use, hearing from other people with similar torches, and I doubt it would last a full week normal use.
So why do I give 4*? Well, its all about context: I bought it as a cheap backup to have around that gives good light. And its £6.99, delivered!
If you're after an occasional backup and willing to be foregiving, get it now! You just can't go wrong.
Quality is typical Chinese manufacture (but at a Chinese price). Zoom easily slides forward when you don't want it to.

For the price I'd say you are not going to get anything better, looked at lots but when it came I was really pleased, it's only downfall is the weight of the torch at the front,... Read morePublished on 29 April 2014 by MR P R J WARREN
