This commentary highlights how the poor have the good news preached to them in Luke's Gospel. Today, that would be the equivalent of the unemployed having the gospel preached to them. What is good news to the unemployed? How relevant is the gospel to the unemployed? The commentator shows the reversal of fortune between the rich and the poor. The rich man loses his wealth, and the poor have a comfortable place in heaven. In other words there needs to be an equilibrium. The rich and the well off need to redistribute their wealth to the poor so that there are equal opportunities for everyone to participate in society and enjoy the fruits of life. When rich people become Christians they find it desirable to share their wealth rather than being obliged to distribute it. Therefore, it is the responsibility of rich Christians to bring good news to the poor by sharing their wealth with those who are unemployed or disadvantaged.
