I will never, ever, for as long as I live forgive my mother for giving this book away (when I was 18 to my 3 year old cousin but that's immaterial). I read it every Christmas Eve when I couldn't fall asleep (a bad idea since the picture perfect Christmas it portrayed made me more excited not less). My favourite parts were the Salvation army band coming to play and the gifts Lucy and Tom got their family. The perfect Christmas gift for any child, or me, if you're feeling generous?

This timeless, wonderful evocation of a childhood Christmas was a favourite amongst the children I childminded for many years. In late November it would be taken down from the bookshelf. It often came babysitting with me too in December evenings and was a real favourite.

What makes it so special are what makes every Shirley Hughes story special, the realism and rich detail. Lucy and Tom's preparations for Christmas are carefully detailed - helping with cooking, present buying, the Salvation Army band playing carols, decorating the tree on Christmas Eve and then the excitement of the day itself...

As with all Shirley's stories, she keeps it real, Tom gets over-excited and tearful and goes for a walk in the snow with Grandad to calm down. What a magical, wonderful book.

Just to add, I haven't read the book for some ten years or so, since I passed it on to my daughter for my grandchildren. All the above is written from memory. Which says a lot, I think.

I read this book every night for a whole year to my young daughter who then took her rather well ready copy to the Edinburgh Book Festival and Shirley was kind enough to sign it specially for her along with the new ones we bought there. My son's favourite was Dogger, and that too was taken for signing. Shirley Hughes books were a great favourite throughout both my children's childhood and they loved the stories and the illustrations were influential in their lives. Every book holds delight on every page and the stories will be read again and again. There is so much on every age to capture their imagination
Sally's Secret, Dogger, Lucy and Tom, Alfie, My Naughty Little Sister, they all had something to capture a child's heart. Don't hesitate, give your child the best start in life with Shirley Hughes' books, you can't go wrong!

This has been a favourite with my children for a number of years. It captures the gentle magic of Christmas as you would expect from Shirley Hughes. The illustrations capture the family with overtired children and patient grandparents. Lovely to read with your children.

As previous reviewers have said, this is the perfect Christmas book, including all the traditions of the season without undue emphasis on Santa Claus and long lists of what the child wants to receive. I was lucky enough to find one secondhand on a market bookstall for my grandson and he loves it. Please please can someone reissue it; it would be very popular with schools and libraries - I want one for library storytime but the cheapest I can find is £10+!!

Just got this for my kids (2 & 3 yrs old)after a bookshop and webtrawl. It has hit the mark and totally up to expectations of a great Hughes classic. My kids have requested it at bedtime every night since it arrived (about 7 nights ago) and I haven't got bored reading it to them either. They loved Lucy & Tom at the seaside and we're still requesting this at least one a week since the summer, so I thought I'd get something more seasonally appropriate! Lovely book. I'm completely charmed.

I say young children, but at 24 I love any excuse to read this with the kids I childmind for, especially now that Christmas is coming! The pictures are just beautiful, completely capturing the magic of Christmas, not easily available in stores either.
