Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is one of my favourite Linda Howard books. I am losing interest in her works as she moves to mainstream and that is a shame, because she is one of the best romance writers around. And this is good example of her work. She is just forgetting her romance roots and it really hurts her books. But this is one of her best.
Robert comes to the small town marina looking for information about his brother's disappearance, maybe death. The Marina is run by Evangeline, she is his target. He knew his brother was possible smuggling information to a corporate rival, and he always came to this marina and rented a boat. In order to learn what is going on, he pushes Evangeline into an affair, using her, doubting her. She is a women scarred by a previous love. She married hometown childhood sweetheart, but he was killed in a car accident on the day they were married. It was a slow death, with both of them trapped in a car until rescuers finally found them. But not in time to save him. He bled to death, while she was forced to watch, trapped in the wreckage. Since then she had lived in their home and worked the small town marina, keeping her heart to herself. But she cannot resist this dark stranger that sweeps into her life, and forces his way into her heart. But he thinks she is using the money from his brother to support the marina. In order to apply pressure, he started making a series of financial moves that threatens everything she own. Robert pushes her to the wall, nearly taking away everything she holds dear, when he finds he has made the biggest mistake of all: he misjudged her. But it may be too late as she has discovered he is behind the bank calling in the loan, behind all the mysterious troubles nearly ruining her.
Powerhouse writing from one of the best.

Little to no chemistry between 2 dimensional characters.
Oh dear, after reading Almost Forever, The Cutting Edge and Open Season I bought this with great hopes. I was so disappointed.
Robert was cold to the extent that I disliked him, seriously he was like an automaton and not remotely attractive.
Evie was rather bloodless.
The "chemistry" felt forced and didn't hook me at all.
In short I was bored by the novel and despite trying hard just could not care less about their romance. They didn't have a romance in my estimation. It was all aggressive sexual harassment on Roberts part, was Evie supposed to think " yes, this man is groping me so I shall fall madly in love with him!"
Bah😡

I am troubled by how much I enjoy Ms Howard's trope filled tales of ridiculously alpha males and innocent girls caught up in a torrid relationship ! On reflection I think they are just great stories. This is a sort of follow on from the equally wonderful Duncan's Bride and is the story of devilishly attractive rich self contained and emotionally detached Robert Cannon who believes that the lovely Evie Shaw is somehow involved in industrial theft from one of his businesses. He starts out to deliberately make her fall for him while subjecting her to unimaginable financial pressures to flush out the baddies. For a clever guy he's pretty slow to realise her innocence and that what he feels is not simply lust but 's Howard just about pulls it off. I will read more!

OK but didnt connect with the main characters as in previous books. In my opinion not one of her best books. Just read Cry No More and was upset when I had finished it but kept skipping pages with this one, Sorry not for me.
