Sabrina is called to the highlands by her grandfather, he is ill and has arranged for her to marry Niall the neighbouring laird. Unfortunately Sabrina has not only heard of Niall's sexual exploits she has actually seen him in action while attending a ball in Edinbourgh. She has no intention of marrying the renowned seducer who's reputation is known throughout Europe.

Eventually she's forced into the marriage and despite knowing what he's like she finds it difficult to guard her heart. When she comes across him with his mistress she's grateful to have the excuse of her sick stepfather, and leaves for Edinbourgh, planning never to return.

I was curious after reading the the later edition of this The Lover: A Rouge Historical Romance (Rouge Regency Romance) why the author has altered the story, there was just one scene that was altered and I'm not sure why the author bothered as he still cheated. I'm not keen on cheating heroes. Apart from that I liked Sabrina she was a very likeable character. Niall was all charm and arrogance I wasn't keen on him at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit boring with a very obnoxious hero 8 Nov. 2015

Found it to be a bit boring and didn't like the hero. Found myself skipping pages and I very rarely do that. Towards the end, I kind of abandoned it for another book. It wasn't terrible but Ms. Jordan can sketch some tough hero's. Reminded me of the hero's in both her books, "The Savage," and "The Heartbreaker" although I liked both better than this. I can't make up my mind if this author is a hit or miss for me. I did very much like some of her more recent work. "The Duke," "The Wicked Marquess." With her older works, for some reason she creates some very unlikeable hero's. This hero was obnoxious. First of all, it was really insulting that way he had to point out and admit openly to the heroine, agreeing with her for more than half the book, that she was plain and not much to look at yet he desired her and couldn't keep his hands off of her. The nickname "mouse" was so annoying and obnoxious that I wanted to scream. She should have belted him one for saying it. He said it a thousand times. Although it was most surely true to the time period, the way most married men carried on openly, with other women, it made it very frustrating that the heroine didn't just leave him right away. She was weak, then got a backbone but never stuck with it. The hero deserved a big kick in the butt, early on in the book not later.
5.0 out of 5 stars She did not want to marry him as she wanted to stay in Edinburgh and wanted love. Niall had promised years before he would marry 29 Sept. 2014

Sabrina Duncan first met Niall MClaren at a ball in Edinburgh .She walked up on him seducing a married woman. She ended up with a kiss from him after the other lady left in a huff. Sabrina later got a message that her grandfather was dying. His death bed wish was that she marry Niall to save the two clans. She did not want to marry him as she wanted to stay in Edinburgh and wanted love. Niall had promised years before he would marry the eldest daughter of a Neighbor to save the clan. They finally married as there was no way out.He flouted his women before her and kept telling her over and over he would never be faithful. He was not nice to her that I did not like about him.He called her mouse since she never talked back. Niall's clan was feuding with another clan so that was a problem for most of the book. Sabrina saw Niall and his old mistress in the garden kissing and on top of each other. She should have been stronger and confronted him. then. She did not confront him till near the end of the book. She finally told him what she saw in the garden. His comment I wish you hadn't .She left saying she was going to visit her stepfather but she meant to stay. Will she get the courage and be strong to let him know what she expects out of marriage. Is there a chance Niall will continue his lover role with everyone but her. This book has a lot of sexual scenes do not buy it if you want a sexless book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lover 16 Dec. 2012
By Romantic at Heart - Published on

I love all of Nicole Jordan books, and have read all but about 5 of them. They are the last 3 books of The Courtship Wars and her 2 newest books in the Legendary Lovers. She does not disappoint in this book either. All her books I rate a 4 or 5 stars. I did have reservations about whether I would like this book since he is a rake and seduces all women married or not, and she is just plain by everyone's standards. Also he agrees only to marry her because he owes a debt. He tells her he is going to continue to take other women as lovers. At first he doesn't even want to bed her, but as he starts seeing her character better decides he is going to make her into a great bed partner even though he will not be faithful. Thru most the whole book she has no confidence that he could like her or that she is remotely pretty. I did find it a little unbelievable that just by changing her clothes, hairstyle, doing a little bit of makeup, and adding a little self-confidence she is now so beautiful that guys are falling all over her. However this is just a book, and some people take some of this stuff all too serious. All in all thought I like this book and have read it a couple of times. I do not agree with some of the bad comments on the reviews. If you like Nicole Jordan I think you will like it. I read it in a day. This book is obviously not for everyone, based on some of the reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. 29 Mar. 2015

When I ordered this book, I didn't know how good it would be until I got it. I started to read after I read the back cover and throught that it sounded interesting. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, it was so funny and the romance was wonderful. It's about a girl that is at the ball. She takes a bit of fresh air and comes across this couple. She hears their conversation and see what they are trying to do. She realizes that she can move or they will know that she saw and heard them. He happens to see her and ends up sending his lady friend away. He then talks to her and while he is talking to he gets word that he is wanted back home that his father is dying. She gets word from her grandfather that she is to marry the same man that she caught at the ball. She does her best to get him to refuse to marry, but it doesn't work. They marry and she catches him with another woman, she hurt and leaves him. She makes him chase her. He realizes that he loves her and does what ever he has to gat her back. It is so funny.
