A love song of sorts from parent to child, illustrated with animal families and a surfeit of snuggles. First-person, rhyming verse expresses parental love for children, with double-page spreads devoted to animal families that exemplify each loving statement. In keeping with the singular first-person text and title, there is always one parent on a given spread, but the number of offspring depicted varies. An early spread depicts a family of cheetahs or leopards lounging in a tree with text reading "I love your sleepy wake-up smile, as we start our day. / I love our morning cuddles, and the way we laugh and play." The closing picture is of a house cat curled up in an armchair with five kittens at day's end alongside text that reads "So snuggle down and close your eyes, the night is soft and still. / I love you, love you, love you, and I always, always will!" Between these feline lovefests, polar bears, dogs, bees, snakes, and many other animals, all anthropomorphized to greater or lesser extent, appear in affectionate tableaux to accompany the text. The sweet-as-sugar illustrations are painted in an Easter-egg palette with rounded forms and occasional heart embellishments to reinforce the text's theme. Sure to find love on the baby-shower circuit. (Picture book. 1-3)--Kirkus Reviews "7/1/17 " --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The whole story is really sweet as it takes you through the life of children and their mums. It is gender neutral which is great cause every child can relate to all the feelings shown. I haven't read such a simple and warm book for a while and it's a pleasure to read.
From the author of the best-selling Snuggle Up, Sleepy Ones, this is another excellent and suitably appropriate night-time title for little ones!
Although in my experience, it also offers super scope for extension exercises with older children who are invariably captivated by the simple but superbly atmospheric illustrations, which perfectly capture the appropriate habitats.
From the back cover:-
'Look, little child, as the night is unfurled,
Animals going to bed round the world.
As the sun slowly fades and the soft, silver moon rises, the baby animals are snuggling down to sleep while their mummies watch over them........'
Durable board covers open to 26 high quality pages in the popular 2-page spread format. Some editions have a dust-jacket, and cover pictures can vary. This review is for the Little Tiger Press edition/2007.
Example of text:-
The first two opening lines are in italics, as are the closing ones, at the end of the book, gently summarising the point.
'Look, little child,
as the night is unfurled,
Animals going to bed
round the world.
Close to her mother,
safe by her side,
Sweet little fawn
is so sleepy-eyed.
Nestled in grass
as the soft breezes blow,
Bathed by the warmth
of the sun's evening glow....'
'Small panda sleeps
as the stars peek-a-boo.
Held by his mother,
all the night through.
Cuddled up close,
she gives him a kiss.
Tucked up together,
they're perfect like this.'
'Sleep, child, like the animals,
in the starlight.
I love you, sleepyhead,
sweet dreams - goodnight.'
In between, two verses for each animal as they nestle down safe alongside their Mummy, and the sun says goodbye for the day!
