As with any Susan Mac Nicol novel, Love You Senseless is character driven, particularly by the two gorgeous protagonists, Eddie and Gideon.
After being involved in a tragic accident, Gideon's psychological response was to shut down his senses of taste and smell. This meant that he had to step down from his position as chef and he now owns a busy fine dining restaurant. Galileo's has become Gideon's main focus, enabling him to block out the nightmares and memories of the fire.
Eddie is the sous-chef at Galileo's and as different from Gideon in looks, as well as personality. Eddie's fiery red hair is indicative of both the love he has for cooking and his sexual passion.
Despite the fact that they are employer and employee the atmosphere between Eddie and Gideon is electric. Though their relationship is inevitable, each moment they spend together is enough to have the reader panting, regardless of their gender or sexuality!
Love You Senseless does not contain as much angst as several of Susan Mac Nicol's previous books, but each character has their own issues to deal with and their responses elicit similar emotions from us.
Susan Mac Nicol's secondary characters contribute so much to the story as well. In particular Carmen, whose sassiness I love; Luke, Eddie's cousin, whose own story is heart-breaking; Leslie who is fabulous (DARLING!) and Taylor. I admit that I was initially unconvinced by Taylor's 'gift' but as the plot develops his strangeness becomes charming and without him there would have been more misery.
Love You Senseless rocked my world and I definitely cannot wait for more in the Men of London series! If you have been hiding under the bed for years and haven't picked up a book by the very awesome Susan Mac Nicol yet, then now is the time to start!
I received this as a complimentary review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.
Now for the reason why I didn't give full 5 stars....
If I was just rating the first half of this book, there would need to be more stars than the five!!! because I was hooked and totally in love with the characters, the setting and the story of Gideon's past and how he is now effected.
However...the latter half of this book, while I still enjoyed it due to the sheer talent of writing with this author, was not as detailed, and fell subject to one of my pet hates in reading. The skipping of time and then skimming over events that have happened in a past tense way. I was left wanting the details of how this relationship developed after they ultimately got very intimate. The first half brought conflicts and showed the detailed journey towards the very hot intimacy between them, but then afterwards, days and weeks were skipped over much to my dismay. I wanted to see more scenes of Eddie helping Gideon deal with his nightmares and other issues. I was keen to see more detail of their relationship and finding out about each other, not to mention more on Gideon's recovery and struggle. Ultimately I wanted another ten chapters from this and felt, from a readers perspective, there could easily have been more, and the the end was a little sudden. In a way it's a testament to this author's talent and how much I love her writing, that I wanted more from her because I can't seem to get enough of the characters she creates.
Ultimately I would still definitely recommend this and if you haven't read her others then go forth!...an search them out for some happy endings and vibrant escapism.
Oh and a final note about this being UK based, which I love, so much of this genre is In the US and while its not an issue, I find UK based books refreshing with many expressions and terms more familiar to everyday speech and also enjoy an overall familiarity to settings, food etc.
Gideon had it all, then a tragedy left him without his soul, his very reason for living. Eddie works in Gideon's restaurant, and from the very beginning, they had fire. They just needed a spark to set it off!
I read Ms Mac Nicol's Alchemy series, and loved those books. This did not disappoint either!
Gideon is suffering, left damaged by the fire that killed his friend. He just needs to talk to someone, but refuses. Eddie sneaks his way in, into his life, his bed and his heart. And I loved them both! Neither man is perfect, but they are perfect for each other. Hot and stemay in places, deep and emotional in others, it pushes all my buttons. I just wished it was longer. Thats why it gets 4.5 stars and not 5, simply because I'm a greedy so and so and wanted more. More Gideon and Eddie, more Leslie, more Taylor (Eddie's housemates) Just plain MORE!!
I do hope that Eddie and Gideon play a huge part in future books, and they arent cut off. I really do, cos I hate when previous characters in a series are passed over, mentioned briefly or even not at all!
Excellent start to the series, Ms Mac Nicol, excellent start.
