I adore the 1980s albums by the Durutti Column and Vini Reilly. Few musicians or bands were able to present such a thoroughly unique and captivating sonic tapestry. The brilliant compositions by Vini were enhanced by his distinctive guitar sound, inventive drum machine programming (yes, believe it or not, it was that creative), and some deft piano playing too. I wasn't that knocked out by this 2009 album of new songs when it came out, so I went back and played it a few more time again recently, and sadly I still feel a bit disappointed. It's not awful, but it just doesn't pulse with that same magical vibe that made the early Durutti Column albums so memorable.

Amazon's main review raves about the "mostly instrumental masterpieces of delicate delight" on this album. Huh? That comment would be more appropriate for the early recordings, for on this album there are actually too many vocal passages. Not that that's such a bad thing. In the past, Vini creatively used vocals to enhance his compositions, but on this album they sound more like an intrusion, and not so melodic.

Alas, this one is going back on the shelf, destined to be a dust magnet. When I want my Durutti Column fix, I'll return to the early recordings such as their first album and "LC", or even "Guitar and Other Machines". Not that's where you'll find the masterpieces.

They still have the edge since their early albums in the 80's, love it. This is one of few bands has made a very subtle transition through out three decades and into new century.
