Product Description

Product Description

Frank Corsaro's 1982 Glyndebourne production of Prokofiev's Commedia dell'Arte-influenced opera, featuring set design by Maurice Sendak. Composed in 1919 by Sergei Prokofiev to a libretto based on the play 'L'Amore Delle Tre Melarance' by Carlo Gozzi, this surrealist opera tells the story of a young prince who is cursed by a wicked witch and forced to travel to distant lands in search of three oranges, each of which contains a princess. Bernard Haitink conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

A very clever and imaginative production of the opera, which itself is, in its libretto and music, well worth one's attention.
Sendak's design add to the visual and musical treats within the story line at all points in the production. I still have strong memories of the Opera North production many years ago, designed by the Svankmajers, with equally if not even better visual treats (and smells)
Well worth the purchase and watching for anyone interested, or not, in contemporary music, opera and stage design.

I reviewed this as part of the "five operas from Glyndebourne", It is far better value to buy the compilation which does have some other little gems in the package. The clever costumes are the best part of this production, but as a stand alone production, The Opera National De Paris with Workman and Banks is my favourite of my four versions.
