Bridge books come in a number of categories; there are technical tomes, quiz based approaches, biographies etc. It is relatively rare for a book to combine a number of these themes, and even rarer for the author to be able to mould those diverse topics into a good read.

Sabine Auken has done just that. In a style that is somewhat reminiscent of "The Bridge Bum" by Alan Sontag, she describes in a highly individual way her life at the bridge table; and what a colourful life it is! She is blessed with that rarest of human qualities: clarity of mind, and she uses it to analyse both life and bridge in a fascinating way.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Got this for my wife who kept reading and got through it in a day or two. There are some good hands here and Sabine also expresses some forthright views. A good read for any keen and reasonably expert Bridge player.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem 27 Feb. 2013

Besides comments on the comback againt the French team, there are MANY hints on how to do better in bridge contests.

Sabine reveals many the the unusual agreements that are part of her system.

One example is a table of opening leads against no trump contracts that looks beeter than the standard advice. Check it out on page 74.

Get the book and read and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly Even if You Don't Play Bridge 24 Oct. 2012
By Bill Reich - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book may even appeal to those who don't play bridge, at least to those who know the rules, played at one time and can appreciate what she is writing about. The center-piece of this book is the last segment of a Germany-France match for the Venice Cup, the world championship of women's bridge. However, Ms. Auken includes much more than those fateful sixteen hands.
She writes glowingly about the game at the highest level and she isn't afraid to take on controversial issues such as gender in bridge and whether bidding methods should be restricted. A reader might wonder, for instance, why there _is_ a women's world championship. Shouldn't the champions simply be the best, women, men or whomever? She addresses that and the related fact that some people want to exclude women from open events.
She spends a lot of time commenting warmly about her partners, teammates, opponents, some of the big stars of the game, even a former husband or two. And she shows clearly that she has a life outside of the game.
The bridge hands she gives us tend somewhat more to the "ooh, shiney" than to practical instsruction but one can still learn a lot from them. She takes sides here also. In favor of the active, the aggressive, the disruptive and she makes a good case for them all.
Finally, there is the issue of her writing. At one time I really loved well-written nonfiction. I am mainly a reader of novels but I can remember reading McPhee's book _Oranges_ and marveling at how much I enjoyed a book on such a mundane subject. Even though I am very interested in the game, this book gave me some of the same pleasure. It is no wonder people really like and admire this adorable person. And they will adore her book too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative 8 Dec. 2006
By Mike Gorsky - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Lots of great tips. Auken gives examples of the mini No trump, aggressive bidding, and unusual carding.

Lots of interesting stories as well. Like the time she spilled coffee on an opponent :-)

You will enjoy this book if you are interested in Bridge, the focus isn't on just Bridge play, but on the lifestyle and thoughts at the bridge table of one of the top players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zakada Thinks You Will Love this Game and Book. 3 July 2014
By Bob Zakada - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Excellent Book and very informative. Thanks to Sabine for taking the time to write this book that everyone loves. Very down to earth and covers bidding, play and defense. Many personal hands and examples. I would be surprised if everyone doesn't just love it. I have read the book two times and will loan it out and read it again. Always see something I missed the first time. I have also check Sabine on the internet and she is an extremely respected player. Very genuine.
