Down the field the team would run as they played in a game, something that was even more fun than practice. Team work was everything and “The second the starting whistle blasted, every player exploded into action.” Edison was intense as they would “pass, dribbled, dodged,” and try to score a goal. BOOM! He leapt into the air and kicked the ball, a ball that “seemed to hang in midair forever.” Would he score for his team? Would Edison Arantes do Nascimento, or Pelé as he was known, ever achieve his dream of becoming a pro?
This is an exiting, dynamic portrait of as a young player. It doesn’t get any better than this because it is told in his own voice, from his point of view. His passion for the sport exudes from each and every page. When Pelé is shown playing a game, we see a double portrait of him, as a man on one side and a boy on the other. The artwork is sweeping, action oriented, and exiting. Pelé shows how thrilling the game can be, but also expresses the importance and value of good sportsmanship. In the back of the book is a brief, but fascinating biography. If you have a young soccer fan, this book is one you might want to consider!
