Heist comedy caper starring Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie. Middle-aged company man Richard Jones (Brosnan) is all set for retirement - or so he thinks. When he arrives at work for his last day and finds that his pension fund has been stolen through the fraudulent workings of Vincent Kruger (Laurent Lafitte), the man who has recently bought over the company, he enlists the help of his ex-wife Kate (Thompson) to help get it back. The two set off for France with their friends Jerry (Spall) and Penelope (Imrie) who agree to help steal Vincent's bride-to-be's diamond necklace which they feel will fully compensate for the lost funds. Can they track Vincent down and secure their future?

I could go on about how fun the film is and the witty writing, but my favourite thing about this film is the casting. Watching top actors act in a fun, quirky comedy brings me so much joy. The two to look out for are Emma Thompson and Timothy Spall who are usually quite straight, serious, incredibly good actors but have such incredible comedic flair and are definitely not afraid of looking like complete plonkers. Emma Thompson was just sensational with her hilarious hijinks but also manages to hold the seriousness of the miserable, bitter character.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film because it is just so much fun to watch and helps feed the idea that you are able to do anything you want, no matter how insane it is, as long as you're determined enough and have friends to support you.
I thought that the rating of 12 (13A in the US) was about right. There was some minor bad language, and one or two instances of ‘strong’ language which weren’t too obvious. There were hints of bedroom scenes but nothing explicit, and some brief implied nudity that was quite amusing.
I think one has to be in the right mood for this kind of film; don’t expect anything thought-provoking or deep, and accept the silliness for an attempt to entertain.
Recommended if you want something light-hearted and fast-paced, and don’t mind some silliness and low-key slapstick.
No real extras; there are some interviews with the main cast but they were, frankly, rather dull.
that much so that I watched it twice on a row, love the characters that they play, they are portrayed brilliantly!
I love the relationships in the film and the people who play them are amazing!
I was totally in awe, the laughter, loving relationships.
The storyline is very excellently written, and totally addictive.
If you were hoping for “conflict” or some dark, sinister, violence-filled story line, you're out of luck - and this is not the film for you. But if you enjoy beautiful locations, with beautiful principal protagonists and the skilful and deceptively relaxed way they engage us and bring us on board for the ride ... well, this is a “feel good” film, that you can watch more than once, and still find the charm in Pierce Brosnan's cheeky delivery and the beguiling attraction in Emma Thompson's cautious response.
They are terrific together and entirely believable in the history and connection they portray. And with their best friends and neighbours, played by Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall, they have to be on their best comedic toes not to have quite a few scenes stolen by those two.
Spall and Imrie are indeed a revelation to me. I knew some of Celia Imrie's work, but not so much Timothy Spall's and he is so genuine in his character, it's almost unnerving. And they're both very, very funny, and likeable in this, and it truly is a quartet piece: they are more than supporting, they are stellar.Read more ›
The first class cast bring out the best in a script which was at times a bit shaky to deliver a pleasant and entertaining light hearted film.

Horrendously bad film, the worst I have ever seen. If you're in the mood for a jolly rom com - pick up something by Richard Curtis. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Bootie Boot
