I'm a cat person, having had at least a dozen cats in my life, but they were all common "alley cats," most of them strays or rescues. I knew a little bit about cat breeds, but I learned a good bit from the story. The cat breeds covered some of the most exotic cats, like the Abyssinian, Birman, and Russian Blue, but there were also some longtime favorites like the Persian, American Shorthair, and Maine Coon. Each breed's description is accompanied by a photo of the cat.
In the end, the girl picked the… well, I won't spoil the story for you, but she made a good choice. It's a fun read for cat lovers and any would-be cat owners (not that anyone really owns a cat!).
The topic is cats and we meet a little family who have informed their child that a pet is the gift for her birthday. The choices of types of cats are so many that we all learn how broad is the spectrum. Each cat is introduced by description and activities and a drawing and then we learn the name of the cat, placed beneath a fine color photograph of that cat. In this book we learn about Abyssinian Cats, American Shorthair Cats, Bengal Cats, Birman Cats, Burmese Cays, Exotic Cats, Himalayan Cats, Maine Coon Cat, Manx Cat, Oriental Cats, Persian Cats, Ragdoll Cats, Russian Blue Cats, Siamese Cat, and Sphynx Cat. (The cat the little girl chooses is left as a secret at the end!).
Not only is this a terrific collection of photographs of cats, but the illustrations and the characteristics of each breed are informative and well stated. This is another big winner for David Chuka! Grady Harp, March 14
There is, for example, Sphinx cat with little hair and big ears and looks very intelligent; Siamese cat with colored points on its face, ears, tail, and feet; Bengal cat with spots; Russian Blue with green eyes; Oriental cat that looks like a fashion model; Abyssinian cat that is tall and regal; Exotic cat that has a big head; American Shorthair that likes to follow instructions, is strong and cool; and many more.
Many children love cats and will find the book fascinating. They will not only discover which cat the girl chose, but more importantly, they will learn about cats in a fun way.
