This album has been in my CD player for a fortnight now. Anyone who loves great songs will appreciate this gorgeous duo date from mother and son Stewart and Charlap. They perform eleven stunning ballads from the pens of such luminaries as Porter, Arlen and Berlin, making each song a very personal statement. Ms Stewart's dusky alto reaches into the heart of each song and always comes back with something warm and true; yet she cam also bring forth the anguish of Porter's magnificent ballad "After You". From the piano, Charlap paints pictures around his mother's voice, drawing upon an astonishing array of harmonies to further each interpretation. This CD is an exercise in intimate performing, and almost hypnotically moving. Added to this, the recorded sound is exemplary.

The first thing to point out regarding this CD is that the programme consists entirely of ballads. I mention this because one or two reviewers on Amazon.com seemed a little underwhelmed by the consistently langourous tempi of the songs, and I wanted any pontential listeners over here to be aware that this isn't exactly a swingin' session. For me, that's a damned good thing, because this is one of the most lovely ballad albums I have ever heard, one that sustains interest and intensity not through fireworks but through meditative interpretations that bring light and shade to some of the finest songwriters of all time.

Sandy Stewart is a rediscovery as a singer, having vanished from the scene during the 70s and 80s, and only making a very few appearences since then. She is now back in the spotlight due to her collaborations with son Charlap, one of the most eloquent and sensitive jazz pianists to have emerged in decades. It just so happens that the beauty of Charlap's playing is a perfect compliment to his mother's vocals, which are measured, soothing and wise. Stewart has a warm, burgundy alto which caresses a melody and lyric and never attempts to oversell a song. Charlap also shares these musical values, and he couches his mother's voice in beautifully distilled harmonies that are a vital compliment to her phrasing.

The beauty of this album can be compared to the equally gorgeous 'Where Is Love', the seminal album by Irene Kral and Alan Broadbent. If you have a taste for quiet, deeply intimate music in which jazz artistry is put at the service of fine songs, Stewart and Charlap will provide much to enjoy.

Superb torch song / cabaret jazz album. Bill Charlap provides beautifully understated piano accompaniment to Sandy Stewart's vocals. Sandy Stewart has a very particular style - her phrasing, care with pronunciation and ability to convey real emotion makes for a singer that can create mood without ever seeming to strain for effect.

The mood of 'Love is Here to Stay' is mostly wistful and melancholic. Listen to this album in the wee small hours for a bit of relaxation or if you are in need of a little uplift and I think it's subtle charms will reveal themselves slowly as the album progress. It should also be noted that this is a beautifully recorded disc, capturing all the warmth and intimacy of the performance. Add in an interesting selection of tunes and you have what can be described as a wonderful and very moving listening experience to enjoy. Top tracks? -not sure, but 'Here I Am in Love Again' and ' I've Got a Crush on You' really are superbly conceived and delivered, but there is no shortage of great things here. Any way, it's all great stuff. I'm a fan. Recommended.

Sandy Stewart has a pleasing voice and delivery and this is an excellent listen. However, for me, the tempi are a little slow and at times the piano accompaniment (by her son), is a little strident and intrusive, particularly on the marvellous Porter classic 'After you, who'

5.0 out of 5 stars extraordinary collection of songs 8 Nov. 2010
By Michael Squires - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent group of ballads, each one performed with great sensitivity to the lyrics of the songs. My favorites are "After you," "The boy next door," and "I'll never go there anymore." Though the voice is occasionally ragged (for example, on the word "qualify" in the second track), Sandy Stewart offers a lovely tonal quality and an incomparable understanding of these mature songs. Yes, she offers no up-tempo tracks, but she presents her strengths - and why not? Bill Charlap is a balladeer, too, and perfectly supports his mother in her restraint, tact, and lyrical phrasing. An example is the phrase "How can I ignore / The boy next door?" - which I've listened to a hundred times without quite comprehending its magic. There are dozens of similar gems in this collection. If you like up-tempo singing (as Ella and Anita do so well), pass up this CD; but if you like exquisite singing, with clarity, jazz tinges, and an autumnal beauty, this CD is really extraordinary. Highly recommended. - MS 11.7.2010

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality performances but constantly mellow 20 Aug. 2006
By Tom Morgan - Published on Amazon.com

Although Bill Charlap and Sandy Stewart are consummate performers, I must agree with the review of Sharlan Douglas. Both mother and son compliment their artistry so skillfully but the tempo of each selection is ultimately and regretfully the same throughtout the entire album. Neither the superbly intimate phrasing of Sandy Stewart nor the tenderly responsive accompaniment of Bill Charlap sustained the interest of this listener. However, when my choice is limited to a few numbers, the combined talents of both vocalist and pianist are intoxicating as one's stimulating indulgence of a fine and delicate wine.
