This is an accomplished novel which contemplates the complexities of the relationships between three young siblings. Set in Ireland in the 1980s and littered with nostalgic references (Bananaman, anyone?), this is the story of eleven year old Brian, a boy struck with a peculiar pre-pubescent Catholic piety and a relentless desire to save his eight year old brother Michael's immortal soul from the devil incarnate (aka their Machiavellian older brother Patrick). At turns sweet, laugh out loud funny, and almost breathtakingly touching there are touches of Roddy Doyle and Frank McCourt in Sweeneys style without it ever being overtly derivative and it is a fresh and original story with characters that are realistically and vividly drawn. This is recommended for anyone who enjoys an easily absorbed family comedic drama full of heart and laughter.Also recommended for those with middle child syndrome or a number of annoying siblings.

I enjoyed this book thought the story thought the storyline was quite cute. Had some laugh out loud moments especially the way the kids thought they could take a soul. You can almost imgagine kids going around trying it. It also gave me a few tears. I have given it four stars because in some parts it hadn't been edited very well and I had to reread lines because it didn't flow well. It was almost like the author had changed what he wanted to say by adding it in without editing was areas there. If you know what I mean. Well worth a read though you will enjoy it.

I purchased this book because it was suggeested on my Twitter timeline. I didn't expect much. I should learn not to be so skeptical! A beautifully written story that kept me hooked right to the last word. The pace is great, the plot has as many twists and turns as the rural roads it's based around, and Brian, our main companion perfectly captures the essence of growing up a Catholic child in the Ireland of the 80s. I nodded along in agreement, I mused the questions raised and I laughed till I cried. Along the way I fell head over heels in love with Brian and the hopes of childhood he represents. I hope we have more from Mr Sweeney very soon.

MG Sweeney is a magnificent author. The portrayal of a wonderful boy and his love for a brother brought numerous laughs and many tears to my eyes. A book that everyone must read. Such a great insight into the mind and life of a child during the 1980s and the strong role religion played in rural Ireland. Michael, the wee pet, played a great role in the book and it was wonderful how he shadowed Brian. Their love for each other will stay with me forever. A read I will never forget and certainly will venture again. I hope a sequel is released very soon. I want to hear more from MG Sweeney.

Huge potential...

Brian is caught between his older brother, Patrick, who’s a bad lot, and his younger brother, Michael, who is very easily led. As with TV’s Father Ted stories, there’s a lot in this which has greater depths if you have a Catholic background. Particular figures like Granny Quinn, constantly saying the rosary, will ring true, as will the permanent fixation on avoiding sins (as against doing something positive).

The story here was particularly good, very human and poignant, and shot through with some spectacularly funny, almost slapstick, humour. It would benefit from a thorough proofreading, however. If you are the sort of person who is pulled out of the story by missing words, apostrophes and typos, this will exasperate you. I really feel it would be worth the author’s while to address this issue as the story and characters have huge potential.

For the Love of God had me shedding tears of laughter and of sadness. It really reminded me of when I was a teenager and had to go to Confession, which was quite often, especially at Christmas time if I wanted to go to the disco. Although, in this book I imagine, if you went to a disco you would definitely be going to HELL. There would be no saving your soul!! :)
A really enjoyable book......... for the most part. You'll know what I mean when you read it. Hope there's more to come.

Really enjoyed this book - had me laughing and crying. Great main character who struggles to be sin free so that one day he will make it to heaven and in doing so does all he can to assist his younger brother in remaining sin free so he also makes it to heaven. Loved the relationship between younger and middle brother and the love between them both.

I don't have a lot of time to read but I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down once I started reading it. It brought back some great memories from my childhood in Ireland. It was well written and I felt like I was 12 again. If you like the series Moone Boy with Chris O'Dowd then you will love this. I hope there will be a sequel.
