Cant believe no-ones reviewed this baby yet, so I'll say a few words about it - here goes:

I'll start by saying that all of Susumu Yokota's work is amazing, everyone who likes electronic and/or ambient music should at least check out any of his recordings. That said, none of his work until now has matched his 1999 record "Sakura" in terms of beauty.

Love or Die, however, easily at least comes close.

These days, at times when Im chilling out reading a book, since this arrived, Love or Die is rarely far from my player.

Theres more of a pronounced ambient-house feel to this one than on previous releases, a bit more reminiscent of say the Orb, but dont let that put you off. For all the house-like beats and use of piano, this is still an ambient record in my book.

Well, thats all I've got to say about that - hope this reviews been helpful!

ignore two of the other reviews (especially the one with the Orb comparison - WRONG !)

"Love or Die" is a poor release for Susumu Yokota - a bland +unadventeruous beats by numbers with a lot of nondescript rambling unremarkable derivative melodies tacked on .. beats are dated - early IDM,post-jazz drum+bass at best with many poorly programmed sub beats also ,and absolutley nothing like TheOrb at all! (The Orb specialised in deep trippy ambient electronica often with an often English sense of humour). Yokota's output is often obviously Oriental in influence + melodic soundscapes ("Sakura", "The Boy and the Tree" or the marvellous darker/weirder "Grinning Cat" release for instance) which made him such a unique late night artist but "Love or Die " is poor by his standards, having lost much of what made Yokota such a treasure in the first place, namely his deep, strange yet beautiful + off-kilter Oriental soundworld.

avoid + go for Yokota's earlier work which is extraordinary ! say :"The Boy and the Tree","Grinning Cat" or "Magic Thread" or the best of "Skintone Collection" instead. far more adventurous , experimental + rewarding. MUCH better.

This is probably my favourite album by Yokota. It is very different to the others. It has a cerebral and cosmic vibe to it. There seems to be a strain of discomfort or sadness running through the album, as if he made it when going through a dark phase. People have commented that it is dull or unoriginal when nothing could be further from the truth. The pathos in the opening track alone makes it worth buying, and there is diversity too. I think people will either love or hate this album, but for me it is the artist's most personal odyssey by far and the one which always moves me. It is intimate, it is honest and it is essentially brilliant. It may not be as exploitative as his other work but the gritty emotions revealed by the music and its sense of destiny make a perfect combination. If Yokota ever had his eyes on his ultimate destination it is here. This is a challenging listen but also a very rewarding one. It transcends genres and offers us something unique; a look into the soul.

...not as calm or beautiful as Sakura or as challenging as Grinning Cat. I think it's worth persevering with, and I will certainly try more of his work, but this was just a little disappointing after the other two CDs.
