Songwriting is at the heart of everything that Texas-born Americana singer-songwriter Darden Smith does and his Compass debut 'Love Calling' is perhaps the finest example of his craft since his hit album 'Little Victories' in 1993. The new album, recorded in Nashville and produced by Gary Paczosa and Jon Randall Stewart, features 11 new songs - including the already critically acclaimed Radney Foster co-write "Angel Flight" - that seamlessly interweave rock, pop, and country with folk and Americana.

"Mine 'til Morning" is a haunting evocation of love on the rebound and his duet with Jessi Alexander is simply gorgeous as a steel guitar rises in counterpoint. "Favourite Way" is a beautiful and sensual paean to the woman he loves, a reverb guitar opens "Better Now" a song of love redeemed and "I Smell Smoke" is a steel guitar suffused song of jealously.
"Angel Flight" is a sterling song about a helicopter pilot taking wounded soldiers from the battlefield, not romantic love but love of dedication and duty. But it is the darkness of "Baltimore" that, for me, is the album's finest moment. It is a brooding, desolate song of love lost but a song of great beauty, too.
Darden Smith's songs are the hallmark of mature and intelligent songwriting and the simple acoustic backings allow the subtle beauty of melody and lyrics to hold centre stage.

I've bought everything he's ever recorded and his songs are constantly in rotation on my iPod and iTunes. When a new collection of Darden Smith tunes becomes available (too infrequently, I might add), I order it and invariably enjoy it. So, I ordered Love Calling a few weeks ago and received my autographed copy in the mail and popped it into my laptop and am listening to it for the third time already. Beautiful songs, great music. My favorites so far are: "Seven Wonders," "Better Now," and "Medicine Wheel."
I never get tired of Darden Smith's music. His work with soldiers and veterans and with kids in the "Be An Artist" program is inspiring.
