Product Description

Product Description

Songwriting is at the heart of everything that Texas-born Americana singer-songwriter Darden Smith does and his Compass debut 'Love Calling' is perhaps the finest example of his craft since his hit album 'Little Victories' in 1993. The new album, recorded in Nashville and produced by Gary Paczosa and Jon Randall Stewart, features 11 new songs - including the already critically acclaimed Radney Foster co-write "Angel Flight" - that seamlessly interweave rock, pop, and country with folk and Americana.

By Angel Delta TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 15 Sept. 2013
Format: Audio CD
Darden Smith is another singer/songwriter in a long line of country performers who don't get the recognition that they deserve. "Love Calling" is Smith's fourteenth studio album since his 1986 debut "Native Soil". It is an acoustic song cycle woven around the theme of love and the ways in which love is manifested - redemption, jealousy, devotion, heartache and heartbreak. The songs are among the best that Smith has ever written.

"Mine 'til Morning" is a haunting evocation of love on the rebound and his duet with Jessi Alexander is simply gorgeous as a steel guitar rises in counterpoint. "Favourite Way" is a beautiful and sensual paean to the woman he loves, a reverb guitar opens "Better Now" a song of love redeemed and "I Smell Smoke" is a steel guitar suffused song of jealously.

"Angel Flight" is a sterling song about a helicopter pilot taking wounded soldiers from the battlefield, not romantic love but love of dedication and duty. But it is the darkness of "Baltimore" that, for me, is the album's finest moment. It is a brooding, desolate song of love lost but a song of great beauty, too.

Darden Smith's songs are the hallmark of mature and intelligent songwriting and the simple acoustic backings allow the subtle beauty of melody and lyrics to hold centre stage.

As a singer songwriter has already made as many records as Darden has made it always is difficult to add every times something really new to it. But Darden sings and writes songs which always catches the fire inside. That's why this record needs to be added to the collection of all his fans. Which i am one of them.

HASH(0xa0d1c3d8) out of 5 stars A stunningly beautiful and mature album 30 July 2013

A stunningly beautiful album, "Love Calling" is easily Smith's best effort in years. Although Smith has always been a songwriter's songwriter, Love Calling presents a mature artist at his peak both as a writer and a performer. Whether writing on his own("Love Calling" and "Distracted") or with other master songwriters such as Radney Foster ("Angel Flight" and "Mine Till Morning") or the late Harley Allen ("Seven Wonders") these songs reveal Smith's artistry at its best - ant that's saying something! The surprising inclusion of his cover of the Bacharach & David classic "Say A Little Prayer" (which appears only on the deluxe edition) sounds like it could just as well have been penned by Smith himself. However, inexplicably and unlike Bacharach & David, Foster, and Allen, Smith's songs are virtually never covered by other artists. If there is any musical justice in this world, the songs on this album will change that.

HASH(0xa23fb444) out of 5 stars A fine, complete piece of work 30 July 2013
By BillC - Published on Amazon.com
As others, I have been a fan of Darden Smith for a number of years. Many of Smith's songs throughout his career provide intimate portraits of life and family. These portraits are not always the rosy, happy-ending kind. The opening track, "Angel Flight," is no stranger to those familiar with the artist's projects. While it had previously been recorded by Radney Foster with Darius Rucker on backing vocals, I had grown accustomed to hearing Darden Smith's version thanks to his TedX presentation. Overall, the songwriting and sound seem very stripped down and sound like tunes that could have fit on his "Native Soil" or "Trouble No More" collections. After only a few listens, I don't think there are any tracks on "Love Calling" that are throwaways at all. "Distracted" has a really nice, personal feel to it. "Medicine Wheel" is another one of those great "story" songs. The stories and relationships depicted in the songs here are just represented with such an honesty, believable, livable, some pained, some delightful. From beginning to end, the entirety of "Love Calling" is a very fine and complete piece of work.

HASH(0xa0d1c504) out of 5 stars More amazing music from a true original... 30 July 2013
By Thomas Grier - Published on Amazon.com

I found Darden Smith's music while I was a radio announcer and program director in the early 1990s. He really knows how to write a great song that draws you in with excellent playing, melody, harmony and structure. Then as you enjoy the music, you listen to the words and get further hooked. Intelligent, fun, funny, and thoughtful.

I've bought everything he's ever recorded and his songs are constantly in rotation on my iPod and iTunes. When a new collection of Darden Smith tunes becomes available (too infrequently, I might add), I order it and invariably enjoy it. So, I ordered Love Calling a few weeks ago and received my autographed copy in the mail and popped it into my laptop and am listening to it for the third time already. Beautiful songs, great music. My favorites so far are: "Seven Wonders," "Better Now," and "Medicine Wheel."

I never get tired of Darden Smith's music. His work with soldiers and veterans and with kids in the "Be An Artist" program is inspiring.

HASH(0xa0d1c864) out of 5 stars Beautiful Album 2 Aug. 2013
By Brenda J. Davis - Published on Amazon.com

I first saw Darden Smith at the Austin Aqua Fest in the 90's and I was amazed. He is the real thing and continues to produce amazing music. Darden has put poetry to music on Love Calling. Songs of heartbreak, vulnerability, redemption and joy round out this hauntingly beautiful album. Darden's sweet melancholy voice are relatable and soothing to the soul.

HASH(0xa0ad91bc) out of 5 stars Love Calling- You need this music. 3 Jan. 2014
By Guitar guy - Published on Amazon.com

What a fantastic CD full of incredible imagery and fantastic music. I have been a big fan of Darden Smith for about 18 years now. This could be my favorite CD he has put out. There are so many that I love ( Circo and Sunflower) are two favorites. This CD takes the listener on a very personal journey of love lost and love regained, and the very power of love that's provides rebirth to one's soul. As a guitar player, I am amazed at some of Mr. Smith's creative use of chord changes, leaving standard chord arrangements for untraditional modes. With his lyrics, I love the pictures he paints for the listener. Many of these songs tear at one's heart. I believe that most anyone will relate to the lyrics in this beautiful collection of songs. I also love that he has Shawn Colvin singing background vocals on perhaps 2 or 3 songs. Anyone familiar with her music will know how her vocals fit so well with his. I also love that he has included a good dose of pedal steel in some of the songs. It lends a lovely spacious sound to the music. Three particularly beautiful songs are done in finger style guitar, and they are," Mine Till Morning", "Favorite Way", and "Reason To Live". Between the beauty of this music, and the great lyrics, I very much am overwhelmed by these songs. On "I smell Smoke", Mr. Smith comes up with the most clever lyrics I have ever heard. It is a great song about deception in a relationship. If you get the Deluxe edition, you get a cool surprise. Mr. Smith sings an old classic "Bacharach/David" song (I say a little prayer). He does a very cool arrangement of this song. I actually enjoy it, which is strange, as I have never enjoyed that song much. So, to conclude, if you love great songwriting, Acoustic driven, Folk, Country, or Classic Rock music with fantastic lyrics, then this CD is a must for your collection. I hope you enjoy it as much I do. It is an inspiring CD, full of stories about love and heart break that most anyone will relate to.
