Product Description

Back to an intimate three-piece and recorded in the Bahamas, this was ELP’s seventh studio album. Released in 1978 during the New Wave and Disco explosions, the album still went gold on both sides of the Atlantic and features some much-loved ELP songs. It was to be their last album for 14 years.

It is probably fair to say that Love Beach is the ELP album which is most often dismissed as the last gasp of a band that where past their sell by date, but if you can get past the poor reviews and the truly AWFUL cover it's actually a very good album. If this had been recorded by almost any body else and had a better cover, although its difficult to imagine how it could have had a worse cover, it would have received much more praise.
The real problem with Love Beach was timing, and that BLOODY AWFUL COVER. It came out during one of the most shameful periods for Britsh music journalism when being fashionable became more important than the music and if it wasn't punk it got a bad review, but strangely so many of the bands and albums that the press so savagely attacked have out lived, and out sold, the punk bands that where so slavishly praised.
The other problem was that it came after a run of truly stunning albums from a band that managed to live up to the hype of being simply the best prog rock band in the business, if this had been one of the early albums instead of the last I'm sure it would have had a better reception.
Basically what I'm saying is this is one of the few times that the small cd booklet is better than the proper album cover, it makes it easier to ignore the cover and listen to the music, and its worth listening to.

It troubles me that the bad reviews put folks off from hearing one of the truly classic rock lyrics of all time. My brother bought this album in vinyl and we were dumbstruck at the banality of it, but when THE LYRIC came round, we simply fell about laughing. We still sing these lines to this day. 'Call up room service order peaches and cream. I like my desert first if you know what I mean!' Magic.

I must start this review by saying that I am a huge ELP fan and it pains me to write this review, but this is a very poor effort. You have to wonder how a band that made such great music up until Brain Salad Surgery ended up producing something as weak as this. Forget the Bee Gees type cover (if you can), side 1 is hardly worth listening to apart from Canario where at least they seem to have found some enthusiasm and a decent tune. Moving on to side 2 with great anticipation (their tour de force was always the longer pieces) you are meet with another weak offering. Not only that, you are also treated to some of the most trite lyrics ever. What was Pete Sinfield thinking of? No wonder they never toured with this material - always a good litmus test of what a band think of their new material. I bought it when it first came out and have listened to it again recently just to see if time has been kinder to the material. It hasn't.

Some people will try and tell you that this is a good album and its only the cover that lets its down. This is one of the most lazy arsed albums produced by a so called big group. The sheer disdain shown to their audience is staggering, no wonder they split up in shame. It was that bad no one is listed as producer. Some of the lyrics on this album are the worst ever committed to tape. Avoid like the plague. I only gave it one star as I wasnt allowed to leave it blank.

This outing is worthwhile for one track alone, Emerson's Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman. Otherwise it's a sad obligatory album best left alone. Memoirs is a worthwhile composition, however.
