I sympathise with the reviewer who found the novelty side of this release unbearable - certainly the "Birdy Song" elements are not for the faint-hearted. However, true genius sometimes takes you to places you don't like to go and genius is not too strong a word for Senor Esquivel. Quite apart from his much-vaunted sonic experiments with stereo and bizarre instrumentation, he ran one of the tightest bands it will ever be your pleasure to hear (no pleasure for the musicians; I get the impression he was a monster to work for). His arrangements are sublime and amazingly imaginative; it's hard to believe this child prodigy was self-taught. Most importantly, I defy anyone to listen to the big-band-wailing, sexy beauty of "Nature Boy" or "Besame Mucho" and then write him off as a novelty act. Loosen up a little... there is one hell of a lot of pure enjoyment on this album. As for the couple of really unendurable novelty numbers on this 24-track CD... what is that FFWD button on your remote for? Believe me, this one's WELL worth the money.

I suppose this CD is really a kind of sampler from the legendary Esquivel's output, but unlike a lot of samplers, its well worth the dosh. The actual songs are a mixture of well-known standards ("Night and Day" etc)and Equivel composed originals (including my own favourite, "Mini-skirt") and they are all given that famous Esquivel treatment. You know, those strange sonic production methods & off-the-wall arrangements that make for a slightly offbeat product that is intriguing, disturbing but comforting at the same time.In others words, brilliant, brilliant stuff!
But c'mon, you really have got experience it for yourself. Get a copy of this CD and bathe in the sonic genius of the man who was pushing the envelope of studio techniques before the so-called psychedelic "pioneers" of the sixties even knew how to plug a tape recorder in...

You either like this stuf or hate it. If you have an ear for the weird and can stomach cha cha and lot's of parara's in your songs then this album is right up your street. If you are still trying to find the meaning of your existence in a cd album then this is not the right one.
It is like declaring you like your coffee sweet, putting 50 cubes of sugar tasting it every two or three to sample if it is just right for you!
Yes tooth aching for some but for others it is just the sound they are looking for.
Personaly I love it, I find it fun, interesting, light and good background music to sit back and relax.

This colourful album has got to be one of the most incredible things I have heard in a long time. Coming from one who is as at home with Bulgarian Folk music as the music of Erki Sven Tuur this is no baseless statement. If you have never heard any of Esquivel's music (and it's likely that you won't have) then you must. To quote a well known film "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll hurl". This stuff is bonkers. Buy it, it will brighten up your day in ways you never thought possible.
