Product description

Product Description

This is the ultimate. One of the rock masterpieces from Santana, "Lotus" becomes a Japan exclusive SACD hybrid multi-ch edition (4ch mix). It uses two-layered SACD with DSD 11.2MHz mastering made in 2017. This is the complete. Seven unreleased tracks, which had been sealed for 44 years long, are included in this set, and finally listed on the original order. These seven are: "Japan," "Bamble," "Ummu Uum," "Sacred Light," "The Creator Has A Master," "SAVER," and "Conga Solo" (about 35 minutes total). Legendary engineer Tomoo Suzuki, who was responsible for recording & mixing of the original work, is responsible for mixing these seven tracks, using the original master tapes stored in Japan. 7-inch size mini LP (22 panel) faithfully replicates its original LP designed by Tadanori Yokoo, including original color photo(s), liner notes, and the original obi. Also includes reproductions of a Japan tour pamphlet and an Osaka concert ticket. Japanese original release.

Format: Audio CD
I love this album, and this is an outstanding (though very expensive) new edition, though it only just merits five stars (maybe 4.5), mainly because of the multichannel mix.

Here are the essential facts. The original 1974 release was a Japan-only triple LP with SQ matrix quadraphonic sound and extravagant packaging. The album went on to worldwide release. Sony Japan found the original multi-track tapes and prepared this hybrid SACD reissue, using the quadraphonic (4.0) mix and adding 7 songs (about 35 minutes) that were not previously used.

The packaging is equally extravagant as the original LP and replicates its contents. The sleeve is 7" and the SACDs have printed inner sleeves and mounted on inserts so they fit the larger than usual size. Card panels open out (like a Lotus flower I presume) with graphics and photos from the concert. Inserts include a replica ticket, a 64-page booklet (mostly in Japanese), a second booklet of photos, and four double-sided cards showing the musicians:

Carlos Santana (Lead guitar)
Leon Thomas (Vocals)
Tom Coster (Keyboards)
Richard Kermode (Keyboards)
Doug Rauch (Bass)
Armando Peraza (Percussion)
Jose 'Chapito' Areas (Percussion)
Michael Shrieve (Drums)

The sound is superb, a respectful and careful transfer of the original tapes, with the new tracks mixed to sound as close as possible to the others. HOWEVER it must be emphasised that the surround mix uses the rear channels for ambience and most of the time it sounds like stereo with a slightly enhanced sense of space. I don't mind this; it gives a sense of being there that is difficult with pure stereo. But the rears are mostly so muted that you might wonder if it is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great version of Lotus 5 May 2017

What a fantastic version of this item. IMO the Caravanserai - Welcome - Lotus period of the Santana band was the greatest. Introspective, cerebral and rhythmic all at the same time. The packaging is also great, except that I would have liked to have liner notes in English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revelatory 6 May 2017
By swansong - Published on Amazon.com

What a miraculous difference between the Columbia CD and this Japanese SACD. A side by side comparison is revelatory. This remaster is warm, rich and creamy, while the US version has a harsh crystalline edge that cuts. The Japanese version is inviting and easy on the nervous system in a profound way that enriches the listening experience in the same way the vinyl version does.

As for the packaging goes, this new release is exemplary in every way. As has already been mentioned, the text in the booklet is in Japanese not in English but every other aspect of the artwork is beautiful.

If you are a fan of this album then you owe it to yourself to drop the cash on this version of Lotus. Yes it's pretty expensive but the value to your ears and soul make it a sound investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations! 3 May 2017
By Bill Hunter - Published on Amazon.com

Wow, a fantastic set, with the previously unreleased tracks, restoring the track Savor, the sound quality, having both stereo and surround (hybrid), all wonderful.
But, the packaging? Wow, you seriously might need 6-stars!
This is an amazingly ingenious way to restore and offer the artwork, the fold-outs and slip-ins, the 7" boards holding the discs, really caps off a very high quality set of a legendary show!
