This review is taken from my blog where I review adult colouring books from a mental health perspective. This book is from my personal collection and more photos from inside can be found on my blog. colouringinthemidstofmadness.wordpress.com

In short, Johanna’s done it again – it’s fabulous and everything you’d want from a watery-themed colouring book. It is worth noting here that the UK and US editions are different and I’m reviewing a UK edition. From what I’ve read online, the UK one is 50g heavier meaning the paper is almost certainly thicker in this copy and the dust jacket in the UK version is removable, like the previous two books by Johanna, but it is not removable on the US edition.

Lost Ocean is a paperback, square book (25cm x 25cm) which is exactly the same size as Johanna’s previous two titles, Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest. It has a black spine with white text, the same as Secret Garden and it looks beautiful with the other titles on the shelf (see photo below). The UK edition has a removable dust jacket which has gold foiling accents on the front and back, really adding to the luxurious feel of this book. The jacket is made of thick paper which you can colour and the inside of it is covered with a beautiful fish pattern which has a waxy finish and can be coloured but only with certain mediums because most pens and pencils are repelled by the shine. This dust jacket is a little looser than the previous two and feels a little thinner, it is also bright white and not cream (see the photo below to see the difference) so it does look a little different from the other two. Under the dust jacket, the book is paperback with bright blue card covers which have an inky black seaweed and coral design on the outside and inside covers.

This is the third colouring book by johanna basford, and have to say, is as good as the previous two ( secret garden and enchanted forest) the paper in this one is a beautiful pure white, whereas the paper in the other two is an ivory/cream colour. I have used staedtler fine liners, and stabilo fibre tipped pens, with no bleed through yet. Faber castell coloured pencils and Prismacolor pencils are also beautiful to use because the paper is so smooth you can get a good even coverage. The designs range from fairly easy, to almost ridiculously intricate ( magnifying glass time) As with all of johanna's books, the detail is amazing, and I simply love it. I've included a few photos so you can get the gist of the type of book it is.

This is a really lovely book. While it isn't A4 sized, it is decent, at approx. 10x10". The cover is removable, and can also be coloured in. It opens up quite wide, as seen in other reviews.
The images are intricately drawn, and provide hours of colouring. Pencils can be used, as can felt tips, which do not bleed through the pages.
I've coloured in a handful of designs, and there are plenty more available. Throughout the book, you can search for little 'creatures', which add to the pleasure of using it.
I bought another book from the series for my 12 year old, and she's thrilled with it.
This comes highly recommended. As long as the recipient has a steady hand and likes to colour, they will adore this colouring book.

The best colouring book I own so far. Beautiful drawings to colour, it's so exciting to just open up on a page and begin an artistic, mindful adventure... creating your own universe of colour while listening to some ambient music. Very relaxing and entertaining. The paper quality is very good, you can use gel pens and felt tip pens and it won't bleed through the back to the next page. I highly recommend it :D

A perfect colouring book with very relaxing patterns! I have found the card stock to be a pleasure to work with however it does bleed through slightly with felt tip pens and professional alcohol based markers are a no-go as they will destroy the pages below. I doubt most people colouring this will be using alcohol markers though so you should be safe.

Excellent very good quality book.
My husband has high blood pressure and has found colouring these books very relaxing.
This book arrived yesterday and it is a beautiful book and quite thick. Will take a very long time to use it all.

Another beautiful book by Johanna Basford. Stunning pictures and so much variety. There is the added bonus of a treasure hunt as each picture is coloured, with items to find hidden in the illustrations. There is so much in each book.

Okay, I admit it - when I first heard about adult colouring books, I was skeptical. Could sitting down to colour be enjoyable? Relaxing? Dare I say - stress relieving? And then I tried it - and the answer is yes to all of the above.

Johanna Basford has a number of adult colouring books out - all quite amazing. I thought I would dive (pun intended!) into Lost Ocean: An Inky Adventure and Colouring Book.

I liked the gold accents on the cover - it hints at treasure within. (I'm a magpie - anything shiny catches my eye!)

Now, are you one of those people who will start at the beginning and do all the pages in order? Or are you like me - I'll pick the one that appeals to me and start with it, choosing another as the mood strikes. Lost Ocean offers a wide range of choices from intricate, to simple. Basford has touched on all things oceanic from images of creatures of the deep - fish, octopuses, mermaids, lobsters, crabs to sunken galleons and their treasures, whimsical designs and more. The last picture is a double sided four page foldout - okay I am indeed saving that one 'til last. Every page from cover to copyright page has images to bring colour to.

And then there's the added fun of trying to also find hidden images in the drawings - diamonds, rings, keys, gold coins and others. (No worries - there's an answer key at the back!)

Lost Ocean is produced on nice, clean, crisp white stock - all your colour choices will show up true. I thought I would start with imagining some brightly coloured fish under the waves.

Remember - there's no 'right' way to colour - enjoy it! Have you tried adult colouring books yet? Lost Ocean would be a good one to get your feet wet! (pun intended!)
