Set in the gritty urban sprawl of Paris and written by a former policeman, this novel is bristling with authenticity. I liked Capitaine Victor Coste as a protagonist; fair minded, suitably jaded and brutal when required. Although the opening half or so of the book is firmly along police procedural lines in terms of genre, I wouldn’t necessarily classify this in that category as a whole. There are some diversions but those are for future readers to enjoy.
The Paris portrayed here is very much the one backstage. Behind The City of Light is a dark netherworld and I look forward to book two taking us a step deeper into it.
