Product Description

One of the great love stories of English literature is retold in this powerful television adaptation, directed by Andrew Grieve (Hornblower) and starring Clive Owen (Children of Men), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Polly Walker (Rome) and Billie Whitelaw (Napoleon and Love). Based on R.D. Blackmore's classic novel set during the turbulent times of King Charles II, the production tells of John Ridd, a young West Country yeoman whose father has been killed by the Doones a clan of aristocratic but murderous outlaws inhabiting a neighbouring valley. John's search for vengeance is complicated by his feelings for Lorna, a daughter of the Doone clan; behind the romance and adventure lie the richer themes of retribution and forgiveness, as John is ultimately able to heal the scars left by the killing of his father through his love for Lorna.

A film for all the family especially if they have read the book. The life lived in the hills seems a little romantic but the photography does justice to the beautiful surroundings.Carver Doone is as bad as he should be,Lorna as lovely.John Rudd could have been taller and stronger if he were the wrestler he was in the book,he came over as a confident and organised saviour. An enjoyable film for all, perhaps not bloodthirsty teenagers!

I like the story of Lorna Doone very much and already own the more recent version. I was attracted to this one by the cast. It is very different in tone to the more recent version but just as good in its own way. I prefer this version's Polly Walker as Lorna and Sean Bean as Carver. Overall, however, both versions are equally enjoyable.

and not just because Sean Bean is in it! Maybe a bit dated, but I enjoyed an evening of entertainment. Good acting, nice scenery - super story.
What a pity the recent TV drama Jamaica Inn couldn't have been as good as this!

It's okay, but too much artistic license. Events changed and bits missed out. However, what was particularly disappointing it was not filmed in it's proper location on Exmoor!!!! Such a shame as the casting was generally good. Sean Bean makes a reasonable Carver Doone and Clive Owen was okay as John Ridd, although lacked the stature of the man described in the book. Lorna was very pretty. Why oh why wasn't it filmed on Exmoor?????

It has just been sent to Sweden as part of an Easter present for a family that stayed here last year and visited Exmoor. I wish more subtitles of our classic DVDs were in Swedish or one of the Scandinavian languages.

I read Blackmore's novel some 20 years ago and I was fascinated, but I have to admit, this adaptation does not do the story justice. I didn't find the characters fully developed and thus I thought they lacked conviction - I just didn't see the motivation behind what they did. It was interesting to see oh so very young Clive Owen and Sean Bean, but the latter didn't have much material to work with, unfortunately. I watched parts one and two, and then let some two weeks pass before I finished, because it didn't seem that compelling.

Polly Walker is infinitely better as Lorna than the bimbo who played her in the rather poor BBC version starring Anthony Coyle (Peter Vaughan was the best feature of that version; Mr. Coyle was okay, but not 'heroic' enough). Miss Walker's looks suit the wildness of the heroine very well - right down to the last strand of uncombed hair. Clive Owen is very acceptable here as John Ridd. One could argue that Sean Beane is too handsome to play Carver Doone, but he's played villains well before, and he's very convincing - and very menacing - here.
An authentic period atmosphere; the final showdown with Carver is dramatically very well handled.
Perhaps this adaptation doesn't always follow the plot of the novel, but it's exciting, at times very moving, and very watchable throughout. And above all, very well acted by all concerned.

Have tried to find this ever since I began replacing videos with DVDs, never realised it had been a TV series. Nice to be able to complete the Bean collection ... To date at least.
A good retelling of the story.
