Product Description

About the Author

James Maxwell grew up in the scenic Bay of Islands, New Zealand, and was educated in Australia. Devouring fantasy and science-fiction classics from an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at the age of eleven.

Inspired by the natural beauty around him but also by a strong interest in history, he decided in his twenties to see the world. He relocated to London and then to Thailand, Mexico, Austria, and Malta, developing a lifelong obsession with travel. It was while living in Thailand that he seriously took up writing again, producing his first full-length novel, Enchantress, the first of four titles in his internationally bestselling Evermen Saga.

When he isn't writing or traveling, James enjoys sailing, snowboarding, classical guitar, and French cooking.

Maxwell has brougth the Evermen Saga to a conclusion here, with the grand battles for the survival of the Serranthian Empire, as foreseen in the The Path of the Storm (The Evermen Saga Book 3), finally happening. This makes the book relatively action filled and while the sequences are not surprising, they are nothing if not well paced and constructed.

Killian is torn between pledging help to Miro and the Alturans on the one hand, and protecting the Imperial Capital - the final target of the Lord of the Night - on the other. And all the houses are more interested in rebuilding after the prior war, rather than preparing for the next one.

Then the revenant army of the Lord of the Night strikes and the rest is more or less a sequence of action events, from the large epic battles on the one hand, to small unit skirmishes inbetween. This element is very well managed and the action scenes are quite gripping.

On the other hand the story development often has a deus ex machina element to it - too often there seems to be a miraculous resolution to the dire situations encountered and in that sense the books are a bit less exciting on the overall level than works by George R.R. Martin or Tom Lloyd.

Still, it is a fitting finale to the series and it came just at the time before the world starts running out of steam.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this saga. Characters have grown, stories developed and now that I have reached the end of the fourth book, I find myself saddened that a fifth volume doesn't await me. This isn't a perfect tome by any means but it's an enjoyable read for anyone into this genre. Suspend disbelief and get lost in the pages of all four volumes. You'll find yourself rushing through sections as the pace of the battles consumes you, catching your breath on the slower passages which are a welcome relief. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did. For now, I am left with just questions of what will become of these fine characters. I hope, one day, a further volume will tell me.

This was a fantastic series. Merryala opened its doors and sucked me in. It was absolutely impossible to leave the magic and intrigue and do anything sensible till the story was told and even then reluctantly.
James Maxwell has spun such a fantastic story with a rich history it has quickly become one of my favourites alongside classics such as the lord of the rings.
The leading characters had everything required to laugh and cry alongside them.

Absolutely marvellous! I was riveted all the way through.
I went through so many emotions. The book is well written with fantastic characters who aren't transparent and have a lot of depth.
I actually felt very sad when I finished it purely because that's the end, over, finite :(
I didn't think I could find a fantasy series that's on a par with Feist's Magician series, but I hit the mother lode with James Maxwell.
I would highly recommend this four book saga, it is riveting!

This book is the icing on the cake. Finally everything that has happened with the characters and their families and friends comes to ahead and unexpected surprises and bits of history comes together and makes sense. From the first word you can feel the emotions of the characters and each action building to a crescendo of the big and last battle, which is spectacular. Great series, great storyteller well worth reading and can be read separately but are better read in order

This is the fourth book in the series I have read and I have enjoyed every one! I haven't wanted to put them down and what when I have I wondered what was happening next.
I have also read all of the Game of Thrones series and I find the Evermen sagas a much more comfortable read - at least the heroes don't keep having their heads sliced off!!
My advice is to start at the beginning and the characters will soon seem like new friends whose stories you want to learn.
They are true good -v- evil plots that have you speed reading to see what happens.

Kindle sale purchase.

I purchased a load of kindle titles recently and so I cant review the titles themselves yet. My reason for 5 stars is because of the price and the overview sounds great.

I will be back later to provide a comprehensive review of this book.

I loved the twists and turns to this story. There are some powerful metaphors in here that can be applied to life. Everything is available to us if we can only reach inside ourselves and gain access. Also I am really wondering why at this moment in our earth 's history that so many of us are into magical mystery stories. Maybe it is merely a reaction to the horrors of war that confront us daily on our TV screens. Or maybe there is something else at work. Hmm but anyway thanks Mr Maxwell. I am sorry that the series is finished but thank you for the splendid journey of imagination that kept me gripped for several weeks.
