Amazon Review

Let's face it--even some adults find Tolkien's mammoth fantasy a daunting mouthful but children now have this special seven-book box set of The Lord of The Rings to make the epic tale just that bit easier to chew on. Split into its seven constituent parts, these slim volumes tell the ageless tale of young Frodo's quest to destroy The Ring and defeat the forces of evil. It's beautifully presented in a black presentation box with the movie logo and an illustration on the side and the spines of the books also form the movie logo. A contemporary look and plenty of "cool appeal" will grab kids' interest and ensure they don't miss out on reading this classic of the genre. --Jonathan Weir --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is such a beautiful box set. Don't be put off by the size (it's pocket-sized, the text is small), but DO be put off by the shrink-wrap. It's put so tightly onto the product that the lumps where it's heat sealed damage the 'leather', causing a row of dents that extend down the front and underneath.
Considering you'll be buying this because it's a lovely set to look at as well as read, you'll be disappointed by the damage caused by over-zealous cellophane wrapping.
I've had 2 in a row that are damaged like this, lets see how the 3rd attempt goes....

Lord of the rings film franchise is my favourite so reading the first book I was hoping not to be disappointed by the book. And I wasn't. I loved the book. I was surprised as to how the film and book were quite different- which isn't a criticism- but I still enjoyed the film more. Reading the book made me wonder why the film didn't contain certain bits that were important in the book but makes me also appreciate what the film made of itself too.

Wonderful sketches by a master artist. It is also the story of the artistic process of making LOTR where Lee must have had to draw lightning fast, at a moment's notice when the production team wanted to go in close on some small device or area of a room/town/world! Terrific imagination and innovation, but he shares the limelight by naming his collaborators who brought his sketches to life on the big screen.

Ordered one for my boyfriend as a gift, when it came the cover was all ripped and creased. So I requested another one. The 2nd one came the same. Decided to do it for the last time and finally it came in perfect condition. I think I was being sent old/used versions, as when the 3rd one came it was in wrapping that was not on for the others.

Having said that, the book I (finally) got was beautiful. My boyfriend loves it. I would award it 5 stars if not for all the fuss. Just be aware in case this happens to you, and if you don't want the fuss of having to repackage and send off faulty versions then maybe think twice about ordering.

I've heard people say this book is "amazing",I've heard people say this book is "awful", but for me, they're both wrong.

The book starts out with interesting characters, wonderfully quaint narration and is an exercise in beautiful simplicity, then our hapless hero sets off on his adventure. With every race of people we meet and every expanding plot point, the carefree outlook of this book diminishes and it becomes clear that were down to business. Unfortunately the action isn't quite as enthralling as the lack of it.

It's not a bad read by any stretch of the imagination but the closer to the last page we get, the less we see of the magic that made the words leap of the page in the first few chapters, until the end battle which (whilst being the climax of the story) simply bored me.

I didn't enjoy the experience enough to read the famous trilogy that follows this, but, I won't rule out someday coming back for a re-read.

I fist read this book, in it's entirety in the 1960s and was then amazed at the detail Tolkien had put into this work of 'pure fantasy'. I found It enthralling and read the whole book in one sitting.
Unfortunately I lost it and am pleased that Amazon have added it to their Kindle library! I will read it again and again as I still find it enthralling and regard Tolkien as a master storyteller.
Thank you Amazon for making this available.

I've read this a number of times before but I always find it hard to put down. If you've only watched the films you may find some differences but be advised, however good the film is, the book is much, much, much better.
