wow! Wow! WOW! This complete recordings set is amazing. Despite already owning the soundtrack, this version is well worth the money. As well as all the music included on the original soundtrack this has more music, more singing, more of everything. It features the COMPLETE score that Howard Shore recorded and all the songs sung by the actors. It looks great. The only downside is the price but once you see and hear, that will no longer be an issue.

I can't wait for the next two.

I have watched all three films of the LOTR many times, but I wanted to hear more of the music. Now, with the release of the Complete Recordings of the first film, the Fellowship of the Ring, I am overwhelmed. It is truely magnificent. One of the tracks I particularly wanted to hear was on Disk No 1, The Passing of the Elves, but in saying that, from start to finish, all the music is breathtakingly beautiful. Worth every penny and a must for all LOTR fans. I can't wait for the Complete recordings of The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The list of adjectives to describe the wondrous qualities of Howard Shore's fantastic score is endless. If you thought that the theatrical soundtracks were good wait till you hear this! The scores for LOTR are wonderful and when you listen they seem to carry you away to Middle-Earth.

I totally understand why some people are annoyed about having to fork out for another LOTR related release - and this CD Box Set isn't cheap! I too hope that they aren't going down the all-too-familiar churn-it-out road that some other franchises have gone down. The only consolation is that LOTR releases seem to be of outstanding quality and when they say you get extras they do deliver e.g. just look at the mind-blowing extras on the Special Edition DVDs!

I have to conclude with my opinion that this stunningly superb piece of musical genius is worth buying if you love LOTR music!

As the LOTR films came out, I religiously bought the soundtracks, and have to say, I'm addicted to them. The Complete Recordings for FOTR encourages that addiction, which is a good thing!
This is essentially the complete soundtrack to the extended version of the film, whereas the soundtrack originally released contained snippets from the theatrical edition. For anyone who hasn't seen the extended versions of the films - GO WATCH THEM, they're far superior to the theatrical versions. And this follows in the soundtracks - this extended version is far superior to the original soundtrack.
What particularly makes the set for me is the DVD - the complete score for the extended version, in 5.1 surround sound! It's like being in the room with the orchestra!
Some people might ask, 'why don't you just watch the film, it's got the same music! What's the point?' If you're one of these people, don't buy this, because you just don't get it. The entire point of buying this is to appreciate Howard Shore's spectacular score as a work of art in itself, rather than as part of the greater whole of the FOTR movie.
The only reason I don't give this five stars is because of the cover - it's packaged in a reinforced cardboard, which doesn't really look like its going to stand the test of time. A pity, because the collection is superb.

This is a fantastic compilation worthy of the quality and attention to detail in the film. Howard Shore's work is stunning and the extra music on these CDs is well worth the asking price. The extra of the DVD in 5.1 surround sound is also a pleasure. Compositions such as "Balin's Tomb" are a real treat in Dolby Surround Sound and they are not cut short by the editor as in the film. Go on treat yourself - it's worth it. The only disappointment is the packaging; but it does not detract from these incredible CDs. I cannot wait for the other 2 albums - where are they?

Howard Shore's soundtrack for the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a masterpiece. Although it eschews the traditional "boom and bluster" approach of the likes of John Williams' scores, this works in its favour in the long run. It is its subtlety and clever use of leitmotif which gives the music such longevity and force. No wonder it wins most filmtrack competitions when put to the popular vote.
The new CD thankfully allows us to put away the edited versions of the soundtrack with which we have had to be content for the last 4 years. Now in grand operatic style we have the full musical accompaniment to the world of Middle Earth. It is akin to dumping a greatest hits selection in favour of the full work- and does it make a difference!
Wagnerian in scope, yet attentive in its detail, it is a fourth dimension to Peter Jackson's outstanding interpretation of JRR Tolkien's epic of Western literature. One of the great works of contemporary musical composition, it will be listened to for as long as Tolkien is read.

This is really a treat as far as soundtracks go... As a LOTR fan and as a musician, I have to take my hat off to Reprise records for the Complete Recordings. As a cynical musician, it is obvious that they are "financial milking the franchise" but nevertheless they have done it in style.
The presentation box is very smart and elegant(but you cannot put the box in your CD/DVD player but it looks good on the shelf!!!)
The CDs/DVD are obviously brilliant. These are the recordings from the score of the extended versions of the film from start to finish. They have not been edited in any way (unlike the original soundtracks which are sound vignettes of the films.)
The great bonus of this box set is the booklet written by Doug Adams. It explains the musical themes of the film using musical notation and relevant musical language. This is good for us budding film composers. This is worth the price alone for me!!!
Buy this, it's good!!!!!
P.S. There are at least three different versions of the LOTR film score i.e the original soundtracks, the complete recordings and the symphony of the LOTR. All worth their weight in gold!!!!
