Amazon Review

A Christian can be forgiven for not reading the Bible--heck, it's a pretty big book after all. But there's no salvation for a fantasy fan who hasn't read the gospel of the genre, J.R.R. Tolkien's definitive three-book epic, The Lord of the Rings (encompassing The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King), and its charming precursor, The Hobbit. That many (if not most) fantasy works are in some way derivative of Tolkien is understood, but the influence of The Lord of the Rings is so universal that everybody from George Lucas to Led Zeppelin has appropriated it for one purpose or another.

Not just revolutionary because it was groundbreaking, The Lord of the Rings is timeless because it's the product of a truly top-shelf mind. Tolkien was a distinguished linguist and Oxford scholar of dead languages, with strong ideas about the importance of myth and story and a deep appreciation of nature. His epic, 10 years in the making, recounts the Great War of the Ring and the closing of Middle-Earth's Third Age, a time when magic begins to fade from the world and men rise to dominance. Tolkien carefully details this transition with tremendous skill and love, creating in The Lord of the Rings a universal and all-embracing tale, a justly celebrated classic. --Paul Hughes, Amazon.com

Really fantastic set. Great look and feel and I don't find the letting too small or difficult to read. However whoever is packaging these needs to have a re-think. The shrink wrap seems to always to cause a mark on the bottom of the box. I returned the first set and got a very fast replacement but this set is also damaged (see picture). Although it is not nearly as noticeable this time surely it should not be happening so regularly. As the mark is so small this time i am not bothering to swap it again just in case the next one is even worse!

Ordered one for my boyfriend as a gift, when it came the cover was all ripped and creased. So I requested another one. The 2nd one came the same. Decided to do it for the last time and finally it came in perfect condition. I think I was being sent old/used versions, as when the 3rd one came it was in wrapping that was not on for the others.

Having said that, the book I (finally) got was beautiful. My boyfriend loves it. I would award it 5 stars if not for all the fuss. Just be aware in case this happens to you, and if you don't want the fuss of having to repackage and send off faulty versions then maybe think twice about ordering.

The only problem I had with this item was the marks left on the leather case from the shrink wrapping. Other reviews have also mentioned this and the marks on my set are identical to the other pictures. This was only on the outer case however - all of my books are in excellent condition, and to be honest the mark is not massively noticeable.

I really love how the books themselves look and feel with the leather binding. They feel quite sturdy, flexible, and haven't shown wear yet (read once). I believe the only things they are missing are full illustrations and pull out maps, but do contain some illustrations, maps, and appendices. The full text is there. Very good for their size in my opinion.

These are a handy size for travel and I'll be taking them with me soon on several flights. Perhaps the size of the text would be difficult for some - I don't find it difficult to read and have no problems with my eyesight. I've attached a picture of the text with a 10p coin for scale.

Lord of the rings film franchise is my favourite so reading the first book I was hoping not to be disappointed by the book. And I wasn't. I loved the book. I was surprised as to how the film and book were quite different- which isn't a criticism- but I still enjoyed the film more. Reading the book made me wonder why the film didn't contain certain bits that were important in the book but makes me also appreciate what the film made of itself too.

Wonderful sketches by a master artist. It is also the story of the artistic process of making LOTR where Lee must have had to draw lightning fast, at a moment's notice when the production team wanted to go in close on some small device or area of a room/town/world! Terrific imagination and innovation, but he shares the limelight by naming his collaborators who brought his sketches to life on the big screen.

Though Tolkien was not the first or most critically-acclaimed fantasy writer, he remains the most beloved and influential, even though "Lord of the Rings" is decades old. Now with the epic movie trilogy based on this book, new waves of readers are discovering the unique power of the "Lord of the Rings." It has quietly created the fantasy genre as we know it, set the tone for most fantasy ever since, topped many "best book" polls, and helped spawn such entertainment phenomena as "Star Wars."

Following up on events in "The Hobbit," "The Fellowship of the Ring" stars the quiet, good-natured hobbit Frodo Baggins, who has inherited a golden Ring that allows its user to become invisible. But his friend, Gandalf the wizard, informs Frodo that the Ring is really the Ring of Power, a tiny invulnerable token that the demonic Dark Lord Sauron has poured his essence and power into. And if Sauron can regain the Ring, he will be able to conquer Middle-Earth. Aghast, Frodo joins a fellowship of Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men and a wizard, to go to the one place where the Ring can be destroyed: Mount Doom.

"The Two Towers" begins directly after "Fellowship," after Frodo Baggins flees with his friend Sam into Mordor, with no one to protect them. His cousins Merry and Pippin are kidnapped by orcs from the renegade wizard Saruman. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli begin a frenetic search for the hobbits, and receive unexpected help from unlikely allies. Meanwhile, the Ring weighs more heavily on Frodo, as he is forced to get help from one of the people he most despised: the Ring's slave Gollum.

"Return of the King" brings the trilogy to an action-packed, slam-bang and ultimately poignant finale.

I fist read this book, in it's entirety in the 1960s and was then amazed at the detail Tolkien had put into this work of 'pure fantasy'. I found It enthralling and read the whole book in one sitting.
Unfortunately I lost it and am pleased that Amazon have added it to their Kindle library! I will read it again and again as I still find it enthralling and regard Tolkien as a master storyteller.
Thank you Amazon for making this available.
