The first in a new series by author Chris Simms. If you've enjoyed ANY of Simms previous books (the D.I. Jon Spicer series or his stand alone novels such as 'Pecking Order' or 'Outside the White Lines') you'll enjoy this new series.
Loose Tongues introduces D.C. Sean Blake in his new job with his Romanian colleague Magda Dragomir. Someone is killing women in the city...but not JUST killing them. The killer seems to have a statement to make about them, their personalities and way of life and cuts out their tongues and shoves their mobile phones into their mouths...nice!
Set in Manchester it follows police procedure to try and find and catch the killer. How is he picking his victims and why?
The chapters alternate between the killer and the police via Sean, giving us a good insight into both their minds.
As well as the murders, there is an underlying theme which seems to be mother/son relationships: the killer and his mother and Sea and his ex copper mother Janet who having been disabled in the line of duty, tries to help Sean with his investigation.
I'm not sure what aspect the wolves Sean sponsored brought to the story, maybe family loyalties?...or that he wants to be part of the pack (police?) but I do feel that the reader gets a good introduction to Sean, his hopes for his new role as well as the link to his past and having been a young carer for his mum.
A story line that despite it's gory undertones seems ordinary (because Sean is) and makes the reader feel part of the investigation.
