If you've never read poetry before but are interested in words revealing the wide-eyed, wise and brutal elements which vie to make up a young mind, this debut anthology is a good starting point. Established poetry buffs will be equally intrigued. The fifty-six poems here takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the moods of adolescence as they tackle such intimate subjects as underaged drinking, early sexual encounters and - daringly - parent-hatred. A deliberately skewed fairytale motif may tempt critics to pigeonhole her as a fantasy-poet but Bird's startling imagery is rooted in the all-too-real. Whether discussing icecream or wanting to attack a teacher, she writes from the gut, as though splattering grafitti, yet each verse is honed. Adults may find her work uncomfortable but should learn from it. Peers may invent her into a cult Goth' figure but will also identify with the pain behind the bragadaccio, for she handles the yearning for love in youth as well as she handles its violence. May Bird's gift remain when she is fully fledged.
