now then a little history lesson then . The most famous person in The Move is /was Roy Wood who started the move in the early sixties then in about sixty nine he formed Wizard and painted his face wore way out clothes and had a ball it seems to me then he disbands them starts ELO with Bev and the gang and promptly disappears till only the other week he was on pointless well how about that (the records OK as well )
Many people still see the Move as a start for Roy Wood, OK, so he wrote some Classic songs and went on to greater success, but there's more to this than just a songwriter, and roy had his off days - Fire Brigade - for instance! To make a song a classic it needs a classic singer and in Carl Wayne they had that, when Roy took over as lead vocalist the group lost its sparkle and songs like "Alice comes Back To The farm" just didnt have it! It was Carl Wayne's version of "Flowers In The Rain" that put the move on the map and with roy on lead vocals, it is doubtful that the song would have had the same effect, (Have you ever heard Paul simon singing "Bridge Over troubled Water" ...Exactly, it takes a good writer to take a good song, but as Nillson proved with "Without You", a great singer is needed to make it a hit! So this group was not just a start for a great writer but also a start for a great singer. Far from dissapearing into cabaret as it is believed, Carl recorded a classic solo album, and then provided the voice on ,many a tv theme (You're A Star- New Faces) and advert (Gillette The Best A Man Can Get). Hear this CD for the singer as well as the songs, this band was never a one man show!
