After listening to the sound bytes I bought the CD with an open mind...I was not disappointed. This could easily be the Prisoners fifth studio album. Graham Day was obviously the man behind the sound which has carried over to the Solarflares. The influences are more varied now but still in line with the late 60's genre. The sound is still the same. Crashing guitar and the heavy hammond. The sound has not changed as such, merely matured. Tracks such as "Feet The Wrong Way Round" sound like early Amen Corner, "Watch from The Shadows" is a cross between The Who and Deep Purple. "Reflections" has the closest Doors organ break you'll hear this century. It never ceases to amaze me how a band can show their influences in such an overt way and yet make the sound their own. Graham Day's songwriting talent has grown and grown. He still makes his digs at the impressarios of the current music scene and the lack of talent also, which is perfectly justified hearing the dross that is about these days and has been since I can remember. Stolen riffs etc yet done in such a way as to own them!
Thirty odd years ago this band would have been in a position to be a major act at Woodstock or the Isle Of Wight. This is modern psych rock. This is real music rather than the contrived rubbish that dominates the current music scene.(How did I write that without swearing!) Approach this with an open mind and expand it. You will not be disappointed.
This is real music. Not for sheep!!!!!!!

Graham Day and his hard drinking troopers third album is an absolutebeauty. The guy seldom disappoints when it comes to putting a good tune toequally intelligent lyrics and the batch of songs which make up the LP areno exception.
The Hendrixesque 'Hold On' is well thought out and pieced together as isthe Northern Soul of 'Feet The Wrong Way Round'which highlights thedangers of dancing on talcum powder! Personal favourites are 'A ThousandLies' and the glorious in your face 45 'You Want Blood' which reallyshould be classed as "classic". The institutional Barry Grayinstrumental,'Girl In A Suitcase' is also quite superb, infact sodeliberately authentic as you would not even realise it was recorded thiscentury.
Although in the eyes of the diehards who like the Prisoners and refuse tobudge off them old copies of The Last Fourfathers this ain't gonna changeyour world but remember, the songs here are penned from the same guy whoreached your head and drank the ocean back in the eighties and they are asnear as dammit to the original formula. "If it ain't broken, why fix it"?.Too bleedin' true mate!

The Solarflares mix garage rock, power-pop, and freakbeat to usually punishing effect on 'Look What I Made Out Of My Head'. If these guys were 19 and from Detroit, the NME would be in full hype mode, praising the guitar savagery and naming every song an instant classic. As it is, The Solarflares (alongside The Insomniacs) are a class act that somehow just gets classier for the lack of commercial expectation involved. So far and away the best straight up rock and roll band these isles have to offer today that your ears won't believe it.
